Is a Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe a good beginners bike?

Looking at a 2005 Shadow VLX Deluxe 600cc for my first bike. I'm 6' 1'' 190lbs. Just don't want to go too small and have to upgrade to soon, but don't want to die either. Don't need anything with crazy power or speed, just getting around town and some cruising.

That bike sounds just perfect. 250cc is just too small of a bike to me. I want something with power that doesn't stop at 45mph. That Honda Shadow only has about 40 Horsepower, which isn't very strong. But it will atleast be able to cruise interstates at 70mph. I still enjoy my old 1981 Honda Silverwing GL500. It's a 500cc V-twin with 50 horsepower, it's stripped of all fairings, so it just looks like a normal bike, and I cruise it at 80 mph on interstate for hours on end. Before you buy the bike. Just sit on it for a solid 15 minutes with your hands on the handlebars and see if you stay comfortable on it. Shift the weight around under you and see if it feels right. It has enough power, so you just need to make sure you are comfortable on it. It's not over-powerful either. It's just right. A 500-800cc Cruiser is a perfect beginner size, a 600cc sport bike has about 120 horsepower so about 3 times more power than your 600cc cruiser. Just as a comparison.

Its PERFECT. Not to much power, sits nice and low. Easy to control. It can't get out of its own way if it needs to. Its also a dam good looking bike.

Yeah, it is designed as an entry level cruiser.

As Daniel mentioned, a vast majority of the "don't get too powerful of a bike" comments are directed at people getting on sport bikes. In my opinion, it is very hard to get on a cruiser that is too powerful. The biggest issue with the more powerful cruisers and beginners is the curb weight they bring.

The monster cruisers weigh a LOT, so obviously if you are new and haven't mastered slow riding? (speeds under 10mph) you are at a higher risk of tipping over at a stop light, in your garage, drive way, etc.

  • Sport bike maintenance for beginners? I have a 2004 honda cbr 600 f4i and I want to be able to keep it running and not have to worry. What are some things I need to know for keeping the bike well maintained? By that I mean when should I check oil, tire pressure, etc. And when do I need to change the chain and all that kinda stuff. And is there just any general tips I could use?
  • Repair estimate on a Honda shadow vlx? My bike sat from October until July due to a dead battery and now the carbs and spark plugs need repairing as well as it being due an oil change. How much money am I looking at?
  • Bike guys. 92 Honda Shadow. 22,000 miles. Asking $1200. Good deal or not? I'm totally new to street bikes, although I've ridden dirtbikes a lot. Just looking for any insights on the bike itself (I've heard they're fun and reliable) and thoughts on the pricing. I'm not looking for websites or anything, I've already done some research. I'm looking for actual experience.
  • Is a Honda Shadow a good beginner bike? I really want a cruiser style bike and wanted to know if thus was a good choice for beginners. I'm poor so I'll have to get a used one.
