Is it ok to take off from second gear on my motorcycle?

I ride a small honda cbr 125 and first gear is extremely short would there be anything wrong with starting from second gear from a stop instead of first?

Bikes are designed to take off in 1st gear but don't think it will do any harm to the bike if you let the clutch go through take off in 2nd gear

Its ok, but you will shorten the lifespan of the clutch.

Taking off in 2nd gear is bad for the engine

It's hard on the clutch. Every motorcycle and every car I've had, it seems like 1st gear is just to get you rolling. Once the car or bike is moving at all, you shift up to 2nd.

And on a 125 I'd bet there are hills you have to do in 1st.

Actually it depends on what you ride. My old panheads and shovelhead with their 4 speed trannys I can do that and its not a big deal. I don't think in your case it will be a good idea as it will shorten the life of your clutch. But I once had an old Honda CB 750 SOHC that had no first gear. I never fixed it and I started out in second gear for over a year before I replaced the entire engine.

IF you are a light rider, and IF you don't rev the engine or slip the clutch excessively, then yes. Wet clutches tolerate it pretty well.

Probably.

But you'll be putting excess strain on the clutch. You will also have to get the launch nailed every time you do it - otherwise you'll stall or bog down.

Just use first - it's there for a reason…

Have you got standard sprockets fitted?

Just more strain on the engine, clutch, transmission. Figure on replacing the clutch every couple oil changes if you have to feather it to take off.

The whole point of first gear is to get you moving.

You will likely stall out on any sort of incline and not have as much power at any time.
