Motorcycle idle adjustment?
I'm new to riding bikes. I have a honda vf700s, and when i first picked it up its idle was around 2k. Which is too high, but it ran mint so i kept it thee. Now its idleing at 3,000! I really need to adjust it but i don't know how, and of you guys know how?
If you want to maintain and repair your own motorcycle, I suggest you go buy a service/repair manual for your bike and READ IT before you attempt to make any repairs.
Sounds more like you have an air leak somewhere between the carbs and engine. Check to see what is causing it as the RPM should not rise unless you adjust the tickover setting.
Mixture and idle adjust screws, dude. Carb sync, dude. Shop manual has pictures, dude. The general concept is called a "tuneup," dude. Didja ever change your air filter, dude?
There should be an idle adjustment screw on one of the carbs, usually where the throttle cable attaches. It will look something like this: Its the long screw with the spring attached.
Warm the bike up completely by going for a 20 minute ride and then use a screw driver to turn the screw until this idle is around 1100 rpm while the bike is running. Blip the throttle a few times now and then to reset the throttle stop against the screw. Be careful, stuff can be hot down there.
The idle screw is underneath the carburetors, pointing up.
It has a a plastic knob to aid in grabbing.
It is in the middle of the 2 rear carburetors.
Look under the carburetors with a flashlight to see the knob.
Hopefully you did not touch the mixture settings on the carbs, if only the idle setting turn it down to about 1000 revs a min or less if even engine beat, also make sure throttle cable is not sticking, and cable is adjusted correctly.
Get a manual. Should tell you where the idle adjustment screw is. Turn it. On the VFR the ideal speed is about 1500 (warm). It is normally just behind the carbs, sticking up. I can be a little tricky to get at but the top is grooved so you can push it with a screwdriver from either side.
If it has kept increasing probability is something is amiss with your throttle cable setup. Ie the cable is tending to stick &/or is fraying inside the sleeve.
Step #1. Go buy a manual for your bike & check where the idle speed adjustment is & how to do it. If turning this does not immediately alter the idle speed it is as I suspect a cable problem. If the problem is genuinely beyond your capabilities to fix ( you feel) take it to a bike mechanic rather than fiddle at random with things you don't understand. Odds are anything you do in ignorance will make things worse not better.
If you do decide to "have a go" then make each adjustment a small precise one & note what you've done s oyou can easily & precisely undo it if it wasn't the problem.
- What is a Valve Adjustment? I'm looking at getting an 01 Honda Prelude this month and valve adjustment keeps coming up when people discuss this car and other cars as well. What is this? Does it cost a lot to do, and is it important?
- You say do I need to keep the Bell helmet the renter wore when he slipped, and crashed my motorcycle? My motorcycle is the 2008? Honda CBR600RR super sport motorcycle. The Cofounder of Riders- Share.Com compensated me the full amount of the motorcycle repairer's written damage estimate. I was also fully compensated for the helmet, which the renter wore when he crashed my motorcycle and my helmet.

I can't balance anything too big as i'm small, I need something that's lightweight, preferably Harley, but any work for me a bikes a bike, Thank you in advance! Note: My Honda Twinstar does not run my father had that bike since I was 7 or 8 and gave it to me when I was 9 but it sat out so long it doesn't work.
