Motorcycle speedometer cut off suddenly?

So whilst riding on the road I glanced down and found my speedometer was completely off, The Bike was still running fine, I could shift gears, accelerate, brake just fine, just the speedometer looked as if the bike was off. I stopped on the side and turned the bike off and back on but it was still completely lifeless.

The turn signals weren't working, The hooter wasn't working and I believe the brake lights weren't working either. The low beam and high beam lights were fine though. I'm planning to get it seen in the next few days but just wanted to see if anyone might know the fix to it if it could possibly be just a small issue or something might just be unplugged or something.

The bike is a 2011 cbr 250R and it was recently serviced only last week at Honda.

I had this happen years ago. It turned out then that the Bowden cable which drove the speedometer had broken just before it entered the body of the meter. The loose end of the Bowden cable inner had been spinning around and had cut through some of the wiring running to the horn and indicator switches, which ran very near to the meter.

You may well have the same problem. Once you have removed the covers and accessed the damage, it is easy enough to fix the cut wires. Replacing the Bowden cable may be a pain, depending on how it is routed to the gearbox.

Speedo cable is likely broken. Remove the gauge assembly panels and inspect the cable and all the wiring inside.

Since all those things you have mentioned are electronic, it probably IS a wire that has come loose or disconnected somewhere on the bike, but I can't tell you where. The guys at your dealer's shop should be able to sort it out in fairly short order.

It will probably be a fuse, a weak earth/ground or a disconnected multi block connector.

There are separate fuses for the headlights and ancillary lights/devices. And easy enough to identify if it is blown and replace (or course if it blows straight away then you will have to discover the cause).

Sounds like a fuse

I'd start by looking at all the wiring you can and the connectors as well.

Electronic speedo on most modern bikes. Since the problem is electrical check the fuses. One of them almost certainly has failed. WHY it has failed is te next problem. Download a copy of the bike's wiring diagram, buy a cheap multimeter &/or a pack of fuses & go looking for the problem

  • Why does my motorcycle cut off at an intersection? I recently bought a 93 honda nighthawk cb250 and sometimes when I'm coming to a stop and I'm downshifting and I get to first gear and make the stop the engine kinda cuts out i don't know what I'm doing wrong if anything, is it the choke? Am I not supposed to downshift before stopping? This is my first bike and I need some help.
  • Test light on positive lead on starter relay comes on when the motorcycle is off, when bike key is turn on, test light is off? Does this mean starter relay is bad? I'm trying to diagnose my electrical problem on a honda cbr f4. The lights turned on but when I tried to start bike all power shut off and now nothing powers on.
  • Motorcycle choke stopped working suddenly? I have a 1986 Honda rebel 450 that has never had a problem starting. I always use the choke if its cold and its always worked perfectly. However, the today when the bike was running, i put the choke on to see if it was working and it had no effect on the idle whatsoever. I now can't start my bike easily since the choke doesn't work. Does this sound like a bad choke cable? Is a choke cable the same as a throttle cable? I can't find them anywhere.
  • I have a Hero Honda CD-Dawn(100cc) sometimes engine stops suddenly when i ride? I have a Hero Honda CD-Dawn(100cc) Motorcycle and from few days, when i ride the engine stops, even when i throttle it to get the acceleration back it won't, it stops and hard to start on again. Have to kick more than 5 times sometimes! What's the issues and how do i fix it? Carburetor is clean and there's a fuel filter between the tank and the carb. And fuel goes clean! is it the spark plug or CDI Unit?
