My 85 honda 250 rebel won't start?

I have a 85 honda 250 cc rebel i was just driving it today and just two hours later i went to take it out again and the engine wouldnt start i heard it spark over about 8 times then silence it sparked but didn't turn over at all i made sure all the switches were in place the kickstand was up and the bike was in neutral i let it sit for a while then went backed and tried again and same thing i heard it spark but not turn over and then silence after that i need help please

Did you check to make sure it has fuel in the tank?

First, take a spark plug lead off one of the plugs and see if you actually have 'spark' when you crank it over. If not, it's time to go through your ignition system, see the attached. A 34 year old bike is also very likely to have developed some rust in the tank, particles of which will find their way into shutoff valves and carburetors, clogging jets, holding needle valves open, etc. This is very simple to disassemble and clean. If it was running hours earlier, it's either fuel or ignition that's the problem.

"sparked over" does not mean anything, you should not be able to hear a spark, please explain.

Was the choke set to enrich? Where I live it was so warm that my bike did not need the choke at all and refused to start with it on.

Change the battery and try again.

No maintenance history given therefore no maintenance. Get a shop, Haynes or Clymer manual and do the maintenance you've missed. Gotta be fuel, spark, or air. Spark's easy to check. If you've never pulled the carb and looked at it and cleaned it, ya gotta do that. Rust in the tank's easy to check: pull the petcocks and see whatcha see. There's Kreem tank cleaner / coater to fix a rusted tank. Follow the directions.

If it's got fuel in the tank, and the petcock isn't turned off, sounds like it's flooded.
I have 2 rebels - an '87, and a 2009.

Batteries go very suddenly. If it is over a year old and not a new Yuasa or glass mat, try charging it.

I doubt it is rust in tank unless you let it sit years outside. You seem to imply your rode her, no trouble for a goodly while; sudden failure. Regulator/rectifiers go, too. When you start her, check for 13,8 volts or more at 2500 with brites on. Ignition connections work loose at fuse box, it has simply crimped "rails". Really needs these connections soldered. Kill switches get intermittent, must be moved often. And, kept out of the rain.

If it Is rust in tank, get another one. I had mine done, Professionally, Twice, it still clogs fuel line, The coating lets go in the heat and acts like Epoxy. If you don't add a line filter, this stuff gets in jets, no cleaner gets it out.
