New to motorcycles.is this bike I'm looking at okay to buy?
I'm looking at buying my first bike and am looking for something affordable but reliable. I looked at a bike this weekend that was basically a professional mechanic's winter project. He combined a Honda motor with a different Honda frame. He started it up for me and it seems to work just fine. I don't want to test ride until I finish my Basic Rider Course. The bike seems to run just fine but I have a few concerns:
1. Is a chopped up bike like this a huge risk? It's not like it's a chopped up motor, transmission and all. It's just one bike's guts put onto the frame of another.
2. The battery is basically exposed under the seat, is this okay? The bike will live in a garage but I can't guarantee that it will NEVER get rained on or whatever.
3. There are other exposed wires that are just out in the open but he claims they are weatherproof (can't remember the exact term of how the inside of the wire is treated) anyways, is it reasonable that he is telling the truth?
If the frame has been cut and welded, I might be wary. It will only be as good as the welder who put it together. But if the frame is OK then I would think that it would be fine, Unless the metal inside of the wire is bare and exposed, all should be well.
Understand money might matter but if this is your first bike I'd say NO! Looking at more trouble than what you're ready for.
I wouldn't buy a chopped bike, no matter what. You are going to have problems with it no matter what you do.
I sure-as-hell would not buy a Frankenbike (a bike made from different parts, like Frankenstein) as a first bike. Get a Honda CB300F.
1). Yes, unless you know the person who has carried out the work and you can trust them 100%.
2). No. There's a very good reason why the batteries are not exposed on cars or motorcycles.
3). No. It is utterly impossible to "waterproof" wires from the inside. Unless they are covered with a waterproof insulator, you will get major problems.
The guy is trying to sell you a potentially dangerous, hacked-up old wreck. Is it really worth risking your life?
Never believe anything a seller tells you unless you can verify it yourself. Very likely the parts are from stolen bikes. Walk away
- Which bike would be a good first sport bike. Looking at CBR1000/600's and also the yamaha R1/R6? I don't know much about the differences, I know some people are all for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, of Kawasaki. Seems that whatever bike someone has, they say its the best. I wish I could just ride all of them and see for myself. Tampa, FL Sam
- Reliable places to buy used motorcycles? If this helps, I want a Honda CBR600rr, abs if i can get it. I want it used, the max Id spend on the bike is $5,000 - $6,000. I'm not sure if craigslist is a reliable place, and isn't the dealership expensive? Don't say cycle world they have horrible reviews. BUT Help?
- Is it worth it to buy a Scotts Steering Damper for my bike? Also will it fit my bike? I have a Honda CR80R Expert. I have broken bones from speed wobbles and i was wondering, will this really save me from falling from speed wobbles?
- Is it okay to buy Honda CR-V with 75,000 miles? I'm considering to buy either 2008 Honda CR-V with 75,000 miles or 2008 Toyota RAV4 with 66,000 miles. Both have clean records and are in similar price range. They are all Front Wheel Drive, as I won't need 4WD or AWD. I'm a recent graduate and this will be my first car purchase. RAV4 had two owners, but it looks like they both have clean records. Just wondering if either will last long without much problems.
