Question about motorcycle CDI ignitions, battery, and kickstarter?
I have a 1979 Honda cb250t that I got a couple of days ago and long story short, there's no spark. It has a kick-starter AND electric start, but it doesn't have a battery in it but it has the + and - terminal leads and what not, I was just wondering, in my motorcycle with a TIA01-20 CDI ignition, is a 12v battery mandatory for spark? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm no electrical genius haha!
There's no such thing as free energy
Go to a Honda shop and ask them. Probably a 6 volt battery. 250 is a small bike. You need to have a viable battery for the CDI ignition to work. The starter motor does not need to work, but so long as you can kick it over and the lights are on the gauges, it will fire up.
If it requires 12 then you need 12V battery. That is the simplest route to go.
I managed to bypass the battery as I had no electric starter and fire up my Kawasaki. So did not need the battery. Wiring for a Kawasaki is different than wiring for a Honda.
Buy a battery.
A CDI needs a small amount of external power (battery) to spark up. The CB250T has a 12V system. Buy a new battery and charge it. You can use the kick starter to avoid flattening the battery and/or overheating the starter. A bit of starting fluid and fresh fuel helps.
