Should I take my cbt at 16 and wait til I'm 17 to buy my first bike?
Hi, I'm 16yr old and I really want to get my own motorbike/moped(I know the difference so please don't explain).
I have around 10months experience on a 125 Honda cb so I'm comfortable with changing gears.
I have spent around 3 months looking around for a 50cc moped(preferably a sports design) but most of them are around £1000 which is almost the same as a 125.
My question to you experienced riders is… Should I pass my cbt now(at 16) and wait until I'm 17 to buy a 125?
Any other answers are welcome. Thanks
Added (1). I'm in the UK. Thanks for your responses, a car is too expensive for me. I'm looking to spend under £1000 if possible, don't mind going to £1200 max
Depends, I started riding at 21 and spent very little time on a 125cc before going for a 600cc on passing my test.
It's all up to you but if I was to do it all again I would wait till I was 24 and just buy a new big bike on passing the main test.
However if I needed transport so bad then I would buy something at 17 and renew CBT every 2 years.
Yeah pass cbt now, get a lovely second hand 50cc enduro 100% road legal.
Get a car when you're 17.
I would get a 50cc, purely for the experince and imnporvement in roadcraft, and learning how to top up oil, tighten the cahin and stuff. Just, please, don't cone on here asking how to make it quicker. Don't forget to factor in insuarnce csts (that guy who told you to get a car forgot that!). My first 50cc (BSA Brigand) was £70. My first 125 (Suzuki GP) was £400. Okjay, thais was back in the ealy 90s but take someone along who know about bikes. If you were near me I'd take you.
Forget the Moped as you would still have to Pass a A1 CBT before you could ride a 125.
When you get your Full A1 Licence you will get the Full Moped as well.
If you get your Full Car Licence you only have to Pass the Moped CBT to get your Full Moped Licence.

- Which bike would be a good first sport bike. Looking at CBR1000/600's and also the yamaha R1/R6? I don't know much about the differences, I know some people are all for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, of Kawasaki. Seems that whatever bike someone has, they say its the best. I wish I could just ride all of them and see for myself. Tampa, FL Sam
- Passed CBT test yesterday, category A and Moped category P. What bike can I get? I'm getting really confused with the new 2013 law, i've read anyone aged 17 can ride a 125cc bike with CBT passed. I did the test on a moped yesterday i'm aged 18 19 in may 30th so can I ride 125cc Honda cbr road legal bike. now I read there's A1 test? Do I have to achieve this now to get the 125cc bike, or since i'm 18 i've reached the age legal requirements with a passed a CBT test and can go out and buy a spanking new bike 125cc.
- Is the honda cbr 500 a good first bike and how expensive is the insurance and cost?
