Taking apart a motorcycle engines. What should i Know?
I have a 79 honda cb750 and i took the engine out of the frame in hopes of replacing some gaskets. If i take apart the engine and put it back together all in the same order will everything potentially be ok? Is there anything i should know? Any other details would be helpful?
There are about a thousand things you need to know. It's not as easy as just taking it apart and reversing the order to put it back together. There are clearance measurements, shim stacks that need to be measured and installed correctly, torques to get right, some things that just get replaced, timing, etc.
Get a shop manual for the book. It's a good place to start. Advice from someone who's been there's also a good idea. You can get that on a Honda CB forum.
Know it's not easy but FIND A SHOP MANUAL.
LOL - I hope you're better about putting things together than I'm. When I put stuff back together, I always seem to have left over parts. That's why I generally take my bike to a dealer to do this stuff.
Agree with the others about a shop manual. See if Honda has a Clymer's manual for your 750.
No.
When reassembling the head you will need to know not only torques but also the recommended order, if you tighten one side up before the other side you face leaks (as an example).
But do not bother with all that work only for gaskets, replace the seals, check all the bearings, probably replace the camchain, possibly have the crank rebuilt.
A manual and a torque wrench will set you on the way.
It's not THAT hard. Get a manual and take your time. A cb750 is fairly basic. On that bike the 'hardest' part is the timing chain. If it's just the rocker cover gasket that's leaking, the hardest part is getting the engine out of the frame.
Shop manual and proper tools maybe someone who can help you that knows a little too
Chilton makes shop manual so you can torque everything back down to speck.
- Why do motorcycle engines have a random displacment? The ninja 250 was technically 248cc. The Honda cbr300 is 286cc. There are plently of other examples too. I've never seen a bike whose engine is actually what they advertise
- Taking out Dirtbike Baffles, GOOD OR BAD? So I recently bought a 2006 Honda CRF230F, I love the bike to bits, the one thing I would like is for it too be louder, If I take the baffle out, will it have any long term damage or will I loose power etc? What are the Pros, and Cons?
- What should I expect when not taking my 2015 Honda Civic for an oil change? Unfortunately, I've been really busy and haven't taken my car to get an oil change. The display message is saying that I'm passed due 500 miles. So far it's a brand new car and I'm at almost 7,000 miles. This weekend I have to drive from philly to Washington. Should I be concerned about my safety when driving on the highway because I didn't change my oil yet? The closest day available to change it was after this weekend coming up.
- Honda replaced my serpentine belt but my car is now taking longer to crank? Honda recently replaced my serpentine belt (2012 Honda Civic, 185k miles). I noticed that on cold starts, the car takes longer to crank and then eventually starts. Sounds like it doesn't want to start but then does. I will take it to Honda but I'm just curious what this is likely caused by? Loose belt? Tight belt? Pulley issue? No noticeable squealing, just the crank time. Instead of the usual 1-3 seconds, now my car takes about 3-5.
