What are primary fluids in a motorcycle?

I asked my friend for a list of DIY motorcycle repairs I can do for my bike. He said transmission, oil change, primary fluid change, etc.

I've managed to find a tutorial on hwo to do all of thse things except for 'primary fluids'. I can't figure out what that even is. He is a harley davidson guy and I know that harleys have something called primary fluids, but when I search primary fluids for my Honda Sabre 1100cc (2007), I don't get any results.

Any ideas? Thanks.

PS I realize I was driivng around without any brake fluid and very low and bad quailty transmission gear oil. Thankfully changed that as of last night.

Primary drive is the connection between engine and transmission. Many motorcycle engines don't have that, their transmission and primary are integrated into engine. The clutch is located in primary.

Honda's don't have a primary drive. As far as I know, you have engine oil for the engine/transmission and final drive gear oil. Get a Haynes or Clymer manual for that bike. You'll thank yourself later

On a Harley, the primary fluid is what cools and lubes the wet clutch, keeping it from burning up. Most other bikes DON't have that and have a integrated system that the engine oil takes the place of.

Brake fluid is one on most newer- after mid 1970s- motorcycles. Liquid cooled cycle- the antifreeze/coolant that should be checked monthly, changed as recommended- or every 5 years for lazy ones. Engine, transmission oil- sometimes same oil for unitary enginewith tranny in same case. Not on big twin Harley for many years and BMW, MotoGuzzi had separate oils. Shaft drives need checking and changing or gear oil at times- annual in spring on old BMWs.

If you ride around without any brake fluid you will not be able to stop (assuming you have hydraulically operated brakes).

Replacing it is only the first part of the task, you will need to remove any air from the circuit (look up bleeding the brakes) otherwise you will get a soft spongey brake (or worse).

  • You say do I need to keep the Bell helmet the renter wore when he slipped, and crashed my motorcycle? My motorcycle is the 2008? Honda CBR600RR super sport motorcycle. The Cofounder of Riders- Share.Com compensated me the full amount of the motorcycle repairer's written damage estimate. I was also fully compensated for the helmet, which the renter wore when he crashed my motorcycle and my helmet.

  • How to keep my motorcycle clutch from burning out? I bought a Honda CBR500R for my first bike. I was riding over the bridge and I hit the clutch to help me get over it. I ended up getting more revs than acceleration after that. I called Cycle Center the next day and they said I had burnt out my clutch because I used it too much. Now it's going to take a week before they order the parts. I feel like riding the clutch is a habit. But I HAVE to use it to get out of parking. Any help?
