What is a good starter vintage motorcycle?

I'm looking for my first vintage bike (70's-80's) I want to start with something cheap, Honda cl350 perhaps?
I do want something that had been known for reliably.
I also happen to like the look of lowered handlebars. Is their a name for this? Can any bike adapt with this mod?

It would be a better idea to get a new bike that has a retro look its called a cafe racer i think, good luck

What you are looking for is called a café racer, or standard. Called this because the seating position looks like you are sitting on a stool at a café. Your feet are directly beneath you and you are leaning forward slightly. Triumph makes a café racer today. The Bonneville. Yamaha has just started selling a retro sr400 this month. Which would be a good beginners bike. It is kick start only and made to look like the sr400 from 1972. But, aside from kick start only it is a modern bike. Fuel injected, Modern ignition, and boasting about 40 hp. Which is pretty good for a 400. Should comfortably cruise at 70mph. Rated at 66 mpg. There are a number of good café racers from the 70's to 80's. The best ones, and most reliable are either Honda or Yamaha and single or 2 cylinder. There were a lot of 4 cylinder café racers made. But, I would stay away from them unless you are really good at setting multi-carbs and have the multi-carb vacuum to set them.

The Honda 350, 360 series is a good start- so many were sold that parts still around reasonable yet and it is a good beginers size. The 750-4 Honda is another vintage choice, again lots sold at the time, long production run, everything that could go wrong is known and repairs known and out on Honda sites. For more parts available for the 'vintage?--Harley has them but price is not cheap. Lowered handle bars sometimes known as a 'Cafe' racer, sometimes referred to as a 'Clubman', sometimes a Bobber. Many bike can get the lower bars- but some have gas tank interference issues and rider position can be uncomfortable-- some complaints on brand new R 600s of various makes when new rider does 100 miles in traffic- sore back, sore wrists, neck hurts, etc. Yamaha had a 650 twin and the Honda 450/500 twins had fair sale records, good choice for some people to fix and ride, lightly modify- often used as the basis of a English Styled 'Clubman or Cafe racer. I have a 1981 CM400 I use as a trainer for couple students, expendable if crashed and has a little 'Rat' look already with Yamaha front end, hose clamps and beer can muffler fix. Kaw had a 440 twin, Suzi and Yamaha that time had 400, 425, 450 twins also.

  • What's a vintage honda 1982 cr 250r worth? I just bought a barn find original 82 cr250r. Bikes in overall good shape for its age. Starts first kick and runs great. All the cosmetics are In good shape except for a small tear in seat. I'm just curious to know what a bike like this sells for. Thanks for looking!
  • What's a good starter motorcycle? I've rode dirtbikes since I was 5 and I just realized I turn 16 in 20 days. So I worked all summer to get a car but f*** a car, is rather get a bike. I have about $2000 that I want to put toward a motorcycle. I really want something lower in cc like around 250cc. I want name brand no Chinese junk. I wanted a something like a cbr or a ninja but my parents say it's a death trap. So what we narrowed it down to is the honda shadow style bikes. What are some other bikes like that?
  • What's a good starter motorcycle similar to the Honda Rebel? I'm 5'10, and weigh 150 pounds. I like the honda rebel, but i realize that it may be too small for me. I want a good looking, easy to ride, starter bike that has freeway capabilities.
  • What is a great starter motorcycle? I have found an '87 Honda CBR1000 for a good price on craigslist, but I don't know if 1000cc's will be too much or not. I really like the look of the bike, and wouldn't mind have it. I have a budget of around $1,000-$1,500.
