What kind of brake fluid?
I have a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550 that I've been working on and I'm new to the motorcycle scene. What kind of brake fluid would be okay to use?
Dot 3.
Dot3 ot Dot4. Flush the fluid if it looks old.
The requirements are printed on the master cylinder cap.
DOT 3 or 4.
No, No and NO to DOT 5 in that bike. It didn't exist when that bike was made - at least for mere mortals. DOT 5 is silicone based and DOT 3 and 4 are glycol based. They are totally INCOMPATIBLE with each other. While you can use DOT 5 in your Honda, You MUST have All of the glycol based fluid out of the entire system. NOT an easy task.
DOT 5 has a higher boiling point and isn't hygroscopic (absorb water) which makes it suitable for racing systems. You Nighthawk has NO need for this.
Use DOT 3 or 4. Be careful. DOT 3 and 4 brake fluid will eat paint. Don't dribble and if you do, clean up immediately.
- What kind of power steering fluid? I have a 05 Hyundai elantra and the power steering fluid is red. Dark red, and a friend of mine told me to use Honda fluid in it when I replace it, I siphoned some out and put a bit of Honda fluid it but the Honda fluid is clear, is this a problem? And what kind of fluid should I use? He said the Honda fluid lubricates the system better than a generic multipurpose fluid. Its probly 1/2 Honda fluid now mixed with the old fluid.
- What happens if I use a non-Honda brake fluid? I have a newer Honda that is low on brake fluid. Manual says I need to use Genuine Honda fluid which is way more expensive and only recommends using a non-Honda fluid equivalent in an emergency situation, only if it's new and sealed. So what could happen if I use a non-Honda fluid? Does it damage the system so I have to get it drained As soon as possible? Or is this just a scare tactic to sell more Honda products?
