What type of oil does a 1986 honda shadow 500 use? - 1

Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Automotive oil uses different additives and will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. Shell Rotella T, both standard and synthetic are JASO MA rated.10w-40 oil is good for cold climate. 20w-50 for hot climate/touring. Synthetic oil will make your cycle run cooler and shift easier.

Thank you! New here.
Since I don't have the manual for this bike( 1986 Honda Shadow VT500C ) does anyone know how many qts it takes for an oil change?

About 2 quarts.
There should be numbers stamped on the engine near the oil fill cap.
Do not just dump the suggested amount of oil into the engine.
Follow the oil change procedure.

Place the bike on the center stand.
Drain the old oil and remove the oil filter.
Install a new oil filter -
Wipe clean the engine where the filter mounts to it.
Dip your finger in clean oil and wet the o-ring on the oil filter.
Screw on the filter and tighten it firmly (hand tight - no wrench).

Install a new drain bolt sealing washer if the old one is is flattened beyond use.
Remove the oil fill cap/dip stick.

When checking the oil level, do not screw the dipstick in - let it rest on it's threads.
At the end of the dip stick is a flat section with an upper & lower line, with cross hatch markings in the center of the 2 lines.
Fill with the recommended type of oil until the oil level touches the middle of the cross hatch lines.
Screw in the dip stick, start and run the engine for a few minutes - to allow the oil to circulate throughout the engine and fill the oil filter.
Stop the engine and let it rest for a few minutes - to allow the oil to settle to the bottom of the crankcase.
Fill with oil up to the top line on the dip stick and check the oil level as described above.

Castrol 4T 10W40 should be fine
