Ballpark cost for car fix?
I posted this earlier with inadequate information, so here we go again.
It's a 1998 Honda Civic.
I turned right out of my parking spot only for my car to drop on the right side and make a very ~expensive~ dragging noise.
The ball joint is in pieces, the control arm is pulled from where it's supposed to be, and it seems the half-shaft has been pulled out of the transmission.
Anyone with some car experience know what price I'm looking at here?
Quite probably more than the car is worth.
This is the point in your life where you wish you had taken the effort to hunt out a really reliable mechanic, because you would be able to ask him, "What should I do?" and get a good answer, without fearing that he might lie to you.
If you are religious you should thank your Spiritual Protector Above for allowing this disintegration of parts to happen at a slow speed. Imagine if it had been while going around a curve at highway speed in traffic!
20 years old, probably not worth fixing
My last 4 cars were Hondas which I purchased new. Fortunately for me, I never needed any repairs, just tires at 35-40,000 miles. I traded them in before any repairs, even brakes, were needed. But… It is my understanding that foreign cars are costly to repair.
Ball joint: $125-$225
Control Arm: $200-$350
Half Shaft: $300-$400
Plus other damage, plus tax. So, in big round numbers, probably about $800-$1,000.
EPIC FAIL
Not worth fixing. Sell the car "as-is" or get it towed to the junkyard. Time for a new 2018 Civic.
They replace the CV shaft. You need a flatbed tow to a mechanic shop. They got to see. Car does not work so worth a few hundred dollars. The buyer will get a deal. Changing one axle shaft… Hell he might as well do both sides himself. Might cost him 400. You can only sell the car for 300 so for 700 he has a sweet deal. You end up with Jack Sht.
Definitely can't buy a working Honda with that amount of cash.
$1,000 - - more if it needs a sub-frame
- How to fix rod knock on my 01 honda prelude? And how much will it cost? I didng have oil in my car and i always forgot to put some now its knocking and as soon as i heard it knocked i got an oil change and i haven't used it in 2 months because my clutch also went out now its fixed and its still making that noise how can i get rid of it?
- How much should it cost to fix a tiny crack in the back of someone's car? I was getting off the high and accidentally hit my friends car in front of me. I basically just rolled into her so i was not going very fast. When we looked at the damage all we could find was a tiny crack (about 1-2 inches) on the back "bumper" I think you would call it (it's a Honda). And the paint might be a little loose. Personally don't think that it's worth fixing but she does. Is it worth fixing? And how much do you think it ll cost?
- How can i fix this Honda Dio? Can i fix it by my own? I wanted to check the front brakes, si i started and raced it holding the front brakes alone. My fingers sliped from the break and I crashed my Dio straight to the wall. Reffer the picture.
- How much would it cost to fix this up? (Honda Civic, pics provided)? How much would it cost if I go to a shop to get it done? I heard that you could go to a high school auto shop class and they'd be able to do it for you, is this true? How much would it cost if I just bought the part and did it myself? And would it be possible for me to do that?
