How urgent is a P0420 code on a honda odyssey if there are no symptoms?
I know I have to get it fixed eventually but how much time do I realistically have before the vehicle stalls and is not drivable.
Any advice or suggestions would great.
That code will NOT leave you stranded.
P0420 is a catalytic converter efficiency code. There's a chance that it's a false alarm, so don't rush to have someone look at it.
Rarely, it might mean that an oxygen sensor is malfunctioning, but not so bad as to be diagnosed as an oxygen sensor failure. A failing oxygen sensor would affect engine performance; if you start seeing that, a visit to your mechanic would be in order.
But it usually means that you need a new catalytic converter.
I'll repeat: you can drive it that way until you have to take the car through emissions testing where you live. Don't panic.
It is worth taking the car for a high speed trip. Give it plenty of revs in the lower gears when the engine has reached full temperature. That can often burn off contaminants which foul the 02 sensors and the catalytic converter. But if the car is running ok you should have ample time to save for repairs.

A P0420 code indicates that the Bank 1 catalytic converter is not reaching it's minimum threshold of operation. It won't hurt the motor. I've already seen using 3rd gear and raising the motors rpms more help keep the code from resetting for a good length of time.
- Is urgent airbag recall a scam? I've been getting these flyers nonstop for almost 2 years. Today I called my local Honda dealer to make an appointment apparently my car has 4 recalls to be repaired. However, I was a little uneasy about it since it's a free repair and who knows what they'd do with my car. The cs representative on the phone scheduled the appointment for tomorrow at 10pm a driver will come pick up my car and said will be ready next day. is this a normal process or scam?
- Is a OBD P0420 causing a P0505? I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX 1.6L and was wondering if my two check engine lights are caused by one another?
- Check engine light turns on for a few days and then turns off for weeks/months? Code P0420 on a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid? Over the last year my check engine light has come on about 3 or 4 times for a few days at a time and then turns off again for a very long period of time. I know the code means my catalytic converter is below threshold but why would it turn off? Could it be something else? Should I look into replacing it or wait it out? Any advice is appreciated!
- Have anyone tried Mr. Gasket Cataclean to clean their catalytic converter? (P0420)? I have a P0420 code on a 2010 Honda Accord V6. I'm not sure if its the O2 Sensor or the Converter though I've been reading reviews on Amazon that a product called Cataclean works. Autozone has a sale going on with that product and willing to try it but I want some inputs beforehand! I rather pay 20 bucks for something than 900+ for a new converter!
