Safelite couldn't recalibrate my safety system and Mercedes told me I had to pay for the recalibration?

So my windshield got hit by a rock. My insurance paid for it in full but I had to wait a month for the windshield to come in from Mercedes. Safelite installed the windshield and said they couldn't recalibrate the safety system because the car is too new.

So I HAD to take it to Mercedes for the recalibration, and after a month of waiting and dipping into my rental reimbursement for a ******* windshield, they told me I had to pay $155 for the repair. They also told me I should've gone to the repair shop THEY approved, but I'm legally allowed to go wherever I want.

This is the third or fourth time I've been unable to fix my car because they make it impossible for others to do so-and indeed the THIRD time my car has had a problem in the three months I've owned it. I'm just going back to a Honda. Who is responsible for recalibrating?

You're responsible. Safelite just replaces windshields.

You are since it as accidental damage and not a factory defect. I'm sure Safelite did not bill you for it either.

If you trade the Mercedes in wherever you trade it in to is probably likely to give less of a trade value for it if they know the safety system isn't working properly. Pay the $155 and get it fixed before getting rid of it. Avoid any possible issues or consequences.

You can go wherever you want. You can't complain that the shop you picked doesn't offer the service you want.
Recalibrating the security system isn't part of replacing he windshield. I would be surprised if Safelite even mentioned it.

Dump the Mercedes. You will get a major screwing any time you have to have something repaired.

If you bought a Mercedes, you signed off on their b.s.

With Mercedes, if you can complicate things, you never make them simple. Yes, that's part of the luxury when you own a Mercedes- excessive cost of maintenance.

"They also told me I should've gone to the repair shop THEY approved"

Sounds like you should have.

"but I'm legally allowed to go wherever I want."

Of course you are. However if you choose to go a shop that you select, then the burden is on you to ensure that the shop can perform the needed services.

"This is the third or fourth time I've been unable to fix my car because they make it impossible for others to do so"

Not exactly. They have equipment unique to MB that's needed to calibrate the safety systems. This equipment is not cheap and consequently not all shops will have it. Independent shops typically only have equipment that makes them money. An expensive MB-only calibration computer that can't be used on anything other than MB vehicles isn't going to be common because the odds of the shop making more money off the machine than they spent on it is low.

"Who is responsible for recalibrating?"

Either you or your insurance company. Mercedes Benz told you where to take your car so that it could repaired completely, you chose to ignore their advice and chose your own repair shop. Based on what you've shared here, your complaint is largely self-inflicted.

IF you drive a new Mercedes why do you care about $155? That is small potatoes compared to what you will see once it is safely out of warranty. You must have money to burn…
