What is the most reliable used car one can get? Your 3 choices?

I'm shopping for an inexpensive vehicle that I can use to run around for errands and groceries in an semi urban area. Something economical on gas and good and reliable.

I was thinking Honda Civil? What is your thought on that?

You're right that the Honda Civic is a good reliable, cheap, easily maintained car. It'll last you 100k- 250k miles with proper maintenance. Another good option is the Honda Accord.

My 1999 Nissan Maxima has about 250k miles on it and I've not had to do much maintenance on it except for a worn-out starter and a headlight bulb in the last 2 years that I've had it.

Other good options are Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla. A lot of Japanese cars are fairly reliable and cheap.

Toyota .toyota .toyota

Honda civil. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Honda "Civil"?

The problem with your question is that you can't group all used cars together. Some used cars are looked after by their former owner(s) while others are trashed, driven hard, and neglected when it comes to maintenance and repairs. Those in the latter group are much more likely to break down and cost more to repair compared to the former.

So yes, you can search for vehicles with good reputations such as the Honda CiviC, Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, etc. But you still have to be diligent and thorough while used car shopping. The most important step is after you find a car that passes all of your curbside inspection criteria, make it part of the deal that the vehicle is to be inspected by a shop or dealer of YOUR choosing prior to finalizing the deal. This is you best defense against being saddled with unanticipated repairs within the foreseeable future.

Used cars have to be judged individually, you can't say "all Honda CIVICS are great used cars". They are all owned by different people and some care for their vehicles responsibly, others might not be so responsible. The only way to know is to carefully inspect any used vehicle, ask for maintenance records, and if you're really interested in buying - take the vehicle to a mechanic of your choice for a mechanical inspection. Once you buy a used car, you are stuck with it and there's no returning a car to get your money back.

A Honda CIVIC would be a good choice.

Hondas are reliable

Honda is good, but some have transmission issues. Toyota / Scion is more reliable. Toyota Corolla for example.

Honda Civils are really nice, they are so polite and never say a bad word about anyone.

  • What's your most and least favorite car brands? State a specific model if you want. Favorite- 3 way tie between Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. I have a Mercedes C320 and it's very reliable. I also own a Honda but I want to replace it with a BMW X5. I do hate a few of their cars such as the BMW X6 Least favorite- Dodge and Chrysler. Not impressed by their styling and build quality. I also hate Toyota, i know their cars are good but their cars just doesn't impress me
  • What's the most reliable low-cost car I can buy in the 2-4k pricerange? So, after several horrific car experiences with repairs and maintenance I simply couldnt afford to keep up with, I'm seeking suggestions for the most reliable car I can get in my price range of $2,000-$4,000 dollars. My initial thoughts were maybe A late 90s early 00s Honda with around 100k (or less?).
  • What is the most reliable car you've ever owned and how many miles did you put on it? Mine was Honda Passport with 250,000 miles bought brand new. Yeah I know it was rebadged Isuzu Rodeo but it was surprisingly reliable with no major problems.
  • Most reliable car for $1,000? I've been looking at Toyota and Honda from 1995-2004 because they get great gas mileage, but in terms of reliability who makes the best 10 year old cars?
