What kind of power steering fluid?
I have a 05 Hyundai elantra and the power steering fluid is red. Dark red, and a friend of mine told me to use Honda fluid in it when I replace it, I siphoned some out and put a bit of Honda fluid it but the Honda fluid is clear, is this a problem? And what kind of fluid should I use? He said the Honda fluid lubricates the system better than a generic multipurpose fluid. Its probly 1/2 Honda fluid now mixed with the old fluid.
Read the owners manual. It will say exactly what you need. It is bad if you used the incorrect fluid. Some power steering pumps use transmission fluid (hence the red color) and others use power steering fluid (clear). If the fluid is not the correct fluid, I would flush it out and refill it with the correct fluid to prevent damage. Here is a video that might help.
Use the red power steering fluid, not the clear Honda type.
Edit: I would flush that sh t out and do what the manufacturer recommends.
- Power steering fluid keeps going below minimum level in my 2015 Honda Pilot? Hi, I drive a 2015 Honda Pilot which I bought in June of this year. Since then, I've had to refill power steering fluid 3 times because it falls below minimum level after a short period. I have not seen any fluid drops on the ground. I will bring the car to the dealership but is there anything I can do besides refilling the fluid again, so I don't have to make tbe trip to the dealership?
- What kind of brake fluid? I have a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550 that I've been working on and I'm new to the motorcycle scene. What kind of brake fluid would be okay to use?
- Does power steering fluid get hot if the car is just running and the steering isn't being used? If the pump is just spinning, recirculating fluid and nothing else… Would it still get hot? I had to bypass the pump from the rack and have the fluid recirculate. Would the pump get hot from just spinning? I know 8th gen Honda's don't have a cooler for the power steering anyways.
- What would cause power steering fluid to leak out of an input shaft seal? Would replacing the seal fix this issue? I don't see why fluid is even entering the steering gear/shaft area anyways. I thought it doesn't. 2008 Honda Civic coupe
