What's the average horsepower for today?

I know the average has decreased, in the 50's it was like 325 horsepower for the average and 400 for the 60's. Someone told me the average today is like 150 horsepower, but my grandmother's 2013 Hyndai Sonota has 190 horsepower. My friends Honda has 125 horsepower, but looks sporty. I guess today cars today are just mean't to be good on gas like an economy car, with a 4 cylinder engine. But I want to get an exact average. For regular cars not muscle cars which there isn't as many muscle cars as there use to be anyways.

You're dreaming. Horsepower numbers in those days were usually SAE gross, which means they were obtained at the output shaft with no accessories driven. And 400-hp cars in the Sixties, even SAE gross, were few and far between: people remember the handful of muscle cars, but no one bothers to remember, say, the Mopar slant six, which was installed in about 100 times as many cars and did 100 hp on good days.

Of cars that matter in the marketplace, four-bangers run 130 to 180 hp, more with turbos; sixes start about there. And "good on gas" is so subjective as to be completely meaningless.

LOOK on GOOGLE LOL

Yea. The average family car in the 60s had less than 80 hp.
A 1968 Ford Mustang GT had about 270 hp. A 2013 base V6 Mustang has 305 (and twice the gas miledge).

Someone told you wrong. Todays cars produce much more horsepower more efficiently than cars in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Here's a personal example - I own a 1991 Bronco with a 5.8 liter V8 and it's rated at about 188 HP. My 2008 Expedition has a 5.4 and puts out 300 HP. More power from a smaller engine and it's much more efficient.

Cars back then had a lot of power because they were very heavy and needed the power to get them moving. Most were equipped with V8s that we would only see similar sizes in trucks and high performance sports cars. In addition to this, long ago there were much fewer regulations regarding how clean an engine had to be. These engines were grossly inefficient and horrible for the environment yet the cars were still slow. Nowdays with much lighter cars we can get away with less power from much smaller engines that are cleaner for the environment.
its actually amazing how much more efficient cars have gotten today. We have cars with 2.0L 4 cylinder engines putting out power and torque levels that would only be seen in 5.0L + V8s of the past.
cars of today are lighter, safer, cleaner and yet still retain the level of performance that we got accustomed to with the big powerful engines of the past.

as for the average hp of today, I can't really help you there, sorry.
