Why are there no more sports compact cars anymore?

I remember in the 90s they had small compact cars like the Acura Integra and Honda del sol and Toyota mr2. Why won't they make them anymore?

The young kids who wanted that kind of car have grown up, got married and started having kids of their own. Now, they need a SUV or some other big vehicle to carry all their stuff.

Not enough potential sales in that segment to recoup the development costs

Americans are obese and need an suv to fit into. Smaller cars are too small for them.

Safety regulation made bigger cars today. Still have VW GTI, Ford Focus RS, Hyundai Veloster N, Hyundai Elantra GT, Mercedes GLA 45, BRZ/86, MX-5, Honda Civic Type-R. Honda should make a Fit si.

They build what sells by the millions, like Camry, Accord, etc. Those small cars don't.

They still do. The Mazda MX5/Eunos/Miata (same car but European/Japanese/North American names.

Also the Fiat Spider (heavily based upon the MX5, but with Fiat's own engine and tranny and some different outer body panels), and the Porsche Boxster.

That's not an exhaustive list, just the first three compact sports cars which came to mind which are in current production.

The problem is market scale!
Even more so just how one defines a sports car and "compact".
To many of us if it is not a two seater it is not a sports car. The number of coupes (two seater hard tops) and roadsters (two seater drop tops) have been shrinking because of lack of demand. Two door sedans have also shrunken in number.
There are plenty of cars that are sedans (4 door cars) that perform better then sports cars of ages past.
The over all factor is by far market size! For roadsters Miata has by far the biggest following. As for coups the market demand just isn't there!
