Why is Toyota so technologically behind?
Toyota Corolla in the States still use rear drum brakes and an archaic 4 speed auto. Compare them to Honda, Hyundai, etc.
When people complained about the lousy braking of the Toyota Fortuner, we all expected them to change to 4 wheel disc brakes. But they only changed the mere front discs.
Toyota Innova has smaller front disc brakes than the Smart car.
FYI, the Corolla "S" type does have rear disk brakes. Corolla also comes with CVT as well as the 4 speed you mention. By no means a Toyota fanboy but you really have to compare apples to apples. MRSP of the base Civic is 2000 higher so you get what you pay for.
Basically, people buying a base Corolla are usually looking for the cheapest possible econo vehicle.
Also, that little light weight vehicle doesn't even really NEED rear discs, so why should they go and spend a bunch of money redesigning something that works, and works well?

- Why Suzuki is not as popular as Toyota, Honda.Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru? I hardly see any Suzuki vehicles on the road, and wonder why if t is also Japanese. it appears that both Mitsubishi and Suzuki lag behind its Japanese counterparts. I feel Suzuki are very good cars, but most people fail to see that and they don't notice it.
- Honda CR-V, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, or Toyota RAV-4? I will be purchasing a used car in the upcoming weeks. I have been saving up money from my summer job and currently have about $4000 to spend. Which vehicle do you think I should get?
- If one or two ISP's ban a site and raise prices, can a new one rise up and compete? Why? Why not? What about Honda/Toyota? Or ' MCI & Sprint muscling AT&T aside? Anyone remember Nucor Steel? Each of those took advantage of very different situations, each with seemingly impossible odds. Thing is, they were all LEGALLY allowed to compete. How about here?
- What should I do about a garage that refuses to stand behind a parts warranty? Five months ago I had new front brake pads and rotors installed (Honda Civic) at a local non-dealer garage. Now they are making grinding noise when the brake pedal is applied. A trip back to the garage revealed the rotors were warped. The invoice said they were warrantied for two years, but the garage said the warranty is with the manufacturer and for parts only. I would have to take it up with them to recoup money it will take to replace these parts and I'd still have to pay for labor.
