Should I Buy a Used 2014 Volkswagen Passat Tsi Se?

My family friend has a 2014 Volkswagen Passat Tsi Se 1.8 that has 43,000 miles on it. She knows I need a car and wants to make me a deal and sell it to me for $9,000. It is in excellent condition, well maintained; although it had a minor dent repaired a year ago, so it is considered "good" according to Kelley Blue Book. Trade in value is $9500, while private party is around $13,000. I plan on using it for my daily commute of about 3 miles (no joke) round trip along with maybe 30-40 miles a weekend, amounting to roughly 2-3k miles a year. My one major concern is that this car will not be reliable. However, I do not think that I could afford a Honda or Toyota of similar value as those would easily run me $11k+. I have thought about just buying it a selling it, but let's assume that is not an option. 1) Assuming I do not wreck or damage it badly, do you believe that this car will cause me trouble if I plan to keep it for two years and sell it? 2) Do you believe that if I go easy on it, it could even last me 150k miles +?

The Passat is a fine car. I wouldn't hesitate buying one, especially from a friend who won't lie to you about their experiences with the cars reliability.

VW makes good cars, but it is a European brand and that means higher than average repair costs and higher insurance rates.

As far as going 150K miles, of course the Passat is capable of reaching that milestone and many more as long as you take care of the car.

Routine maintenance of any car is required. If you abuse and ignore a car it won't last. Take care of it, maintain it properly it will last well into the 200k mile range.

Cars don't die, owners kill them.

Well, you certainly can't buy a new 2014, can you?

HI No car can be guaranteed to last 150k miles as they are designed to last just 100k miles or 8 years which ever comes first. So she would not get what the book says as it is well over the 36 k miles it should have done.

No

On the whole it is not a bad car. Asking questions like this show that you are not confident in the deal and the future outcomes. No one can predict what you ask for a used car.

It will be fine as little as you drive. And its a good deal because you are paying below market.

That said, why not keep it 6-8+ years?

Why not? A well serviced and maintained car like this should easily be good for 150K miles plus. Just keep it serviced as recommended. The car is slightly over average mileage and the asking price should reflect this.

Please don't listen to idiots telling you a car is "designed" to last 8 years or 100k miles. This is complete nonsense.
