SUPERTECH 5w-30 longevity?
My dad drives a 2010 Honda Accord with the basic 2.4l 4-banger and drives about 100 miles a day, for five days a week… Now all he uses is SUPERTECH 5w-30 and he changes it at 6-8k miles when the Honda "oil/maintenance" light comes on. Keep in mind this is DINO or conventional oil. Is he harming his car following the oil change minder over the 3-5k lifespan of typical conventional oils. Both my parents act like its no big deal oil is just "oil" I never believed that. So thought I'd ask you guys with more knowledge and experience. I always use Liqui-Moly or Mobil 1 Extended Performance for my vehicles but. Anyways?
Changing your automobile's oil at 3k miles, or when the "oil/maintenance" light comes on, is overkill. The maintenance indicator is only a suggestion of oil maintenance, not an absolute must. Quality motor oil will very easily keep it's viscosity and integrity for 4 to 5k miles, or more, in normal driving conditions.
Supertech oil and filters are actually good quality for the price -changing oil on regular intervals per the manufacturers recommendation is always a good thing - I drove a 2000 Ford focus to 147k on Castrol GTX with regular oil changes 7500+ - but not every 3k miles - that is overkill for today's better quality oil, filters, and fuel injected cars - just not necessary
I couldn't find a link for the dino oil

Looks like it meets all standards
There's nothing wrong with supertech. If you want to spend excessive amounts of money on oil, do it
First off, the Honda recommended viscosity if 5W-20, NOT 5W-30. That's really important on this engine because it has variable valve timing and the VVT is controlled by oil pressure. Switching to a higher viscosity can screw up the VVT. Tell him to switch back.
The oil change light on this vehicle is NOT just based on mileage. It's based on number of cold starts and accumulated RPMs. Also, it's based on the use of convention oil, not synthetic. So your dad is fine doing what he's doing.
Everything changed in 2011 though. That must be synthetic and 0W-20.
I never understood the thinking of synthetic oils lasting longer
oil needs to be changed because it gets dirty, not because it wears out
so, why would anyone want to keep having your oil get more contaminated for maybe 15K miles I could never figure out
- Which mini SUV is better for gas mileage and longevity? I have been looking at mini SUV's/crossovers and have narrowed down my choices to these 3: Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Keep in mind that I'm not buying a brand new one from the year 2014 or 2013. I'm looking at the years 2010 - 2012. So which is the overall better choice?
