Why does my car rev while idle?

The car will rev up and down when I'm at a red light and it has a hard time taking off as well sometimes. It has even died on me a couple of times while i was stopped but started right back up.

I went to auto zone and they ran a test because the check engine light came on. The code says the cylinder 2 is misfiring. I just had the timing belt and spark plugs changed within in the last year. I also just used some fuel injector cleaner and it still is giving me trouble.

Its a 97 Honda Accord SE 4 cylinder.

It sounds like a plug lead arcing.

The Idle Air Controller (IAC) controls idle. But that would enter a code. There's no code for a VACUUM LEAK and you should check your lines and fittings. If you have over 100K miles your Ignition Wires need to be replaced. And your Distributor Cap and Rotor could also need replacement if it wasn't done with the spark plugs.

Idle hunting is a favorite Honda pastime. The first thing to check is to make sure the coolant is full and there's not a bubble in it. One of the housings where the radiator hoses connect to the engine will have a bleed nipple on the top. It looks like an oversized brake bleed nipple. With the engine cool, open that nipple 1/2 turn (a 12 mm socket, I recall) and close it when a steady stream of coolant comes out. If a bubble is trapped in the system it will drive the Fast Idle Thermo Valve nuts. After bleeding the coolant, make sure the radiator is full.

There's also an idle preset screw in the throttle body and sometimes that has to be adjusted to stop the hunting. IAC valves rarely cause hunting in Hondas, but that doesn't mean they never do. If the hunting continues to be a problem after you've done the obvious things it is a job for a Honda expert.
