Hows the 2016 Honda Civic EX-L for a first car? - 1

No one needs a NEW car for their "first car", Just saying'

The new Civic has been getting pretty positive reviews, I'd say its a definite good first car

It is one of the best compact cars you can buy.

New drivers should have old cars. One of my former insurance agents explained to me a new driver, if they are a good driver, has a 60% chance of wrecking in the first year and an 80% chance of wrecking in the first three years (I made to to my third year). It is all about the steep and unforgiving learning curve for driving in traffic. Even worse is if it is financed (bought on payments). That requires collision insurance, pushing your car costs completely out of sight. You would join the ranks of the people in the sources who found themselves "upside down" - owing more money on the car than it was worth and being unable to make the payments and pay the mandatory insurance. It can kill your chances of going to college or moving out of the house. It is your worst nightmare short of a pregnant girlfriend.

Financing a car for a new driver is even worse than that. In the very likely case of the car being totaled because of a rookie mistake, the insurance will pay off the value of the car to the bank. Of course, unless you have paid for the gap insurance you will still have to pay the thousands difference between the value of the car and what you owe. Typically, the insurance will increase your premiums to repay what they paid out, over a period of three years. If they paid $18,000 your insurance will go up $6000 per year or $500 per month. You probably can't afford to pay that so you won't be driving until you can, and the payback will be waiting for you… Even if you change insurance.

In short, it is crazy talk for a new driver to have a new car. I always recommend a 2005+ Ford Focus - cheap to buy, cheap to own, cheap to feed and cheap to insure. I especially like Ford's excellent engine temperature management system, which prevents most head gasket failures.

Get an old car and don't buy a multi-year nightmare.

  • 2016 MINI Cooper Hardtop 4 Door or 2016 Honda Fit for first car? I love cute and comfy. Mostly just to get to and from work at Disney, but I'm also a big traveler so would love something comfy and cozy that sort of resembles my personality (I know- I'm cheesy) I know nothing about cars and this will be my first! I'm 19 and have waited to get my license for way too long so I'm working on it in Driving 101 and should take the test next month!
  • Should I get a 2016 Honda CR-V EX AWD or a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.1i Limited? I'm trying to decide between the two. They are both the same price at my dealers. I'm probably going to end up moving to Colorado but I don't think I will go off road at all. Which of these is the better car? Which do you think will last longer?
  • Which car is better, the 2016 Honda Civic EX-T or the 2016 Mazda 6 i sport? I'm getting a new car next month, and my choices have been cut down to these two cars. I'm having difficulty deciding. Which one is better? Please list spec differences (exterior and interior) as well as the reasoning behind your decision.
  • Which car is better 2016 Honda Civic coupe or 2016 Hyundai Genesis coupe? I'm looking for a new car and these two are the only cars that fit my budge as a sporty car. The Honda Civic has a v cylinder engin and Genesis has v6. Civic offers Apple car play whereas Genesis does not… They both have many pors and cons to them and I can't decide which one is better and worthwhile… Please I need opinions!
