Is it worth buying this car for $700?

I found a car on Craigslist selling for $900. I was interested in it a lot. It was a 1998 Honda Civic DX Sedan and has 110,000 miles on it. I texted the person who was selling it and they told me the car is in good shape but the only thing it needs is to be repainted on the hood because of sun damage, catalytic converter and needs new tires soon. So what do you guys think, is it a good deal? I was planning on checking it out but I don't know much about cars so I don't want to waste my time. By the way he told me the lowest he will go is $700.

Catalytic converters can be very expensive. I'd keep looking if I were you.

Check with your local muffler shop to see what they charge to put a converter especially if this will be a daily driver. If it's within your price range get it checked by a mechanic to see if that's all that's wrong with it

I second getting it inspected if it checks out when you see it. Besides the catalytic converter, at that mileage the car will need a new timing belt, which is another fairly expensive repair if it hasn't already been done (which I doubt given the rest of the car's condition). Each of those two repairs will probably cost around the price of the car, which would effectively make it $2,100 plus the cost of tires. The car is also 17 years old and, by the sound of it, may not have been well cared for, so there are likely other issues.

It sounds to me like the car would be okay for someone with the skills, time and inclination to do complex repairs him/herself but would otherwise require cost a fair amount to get back to reliable daily driving condition.

No, go get it looked at

It's a $700 car. If you get 6 months to a year out of it, you are doing good.

Does you state have smog?

Even a used catalytic converter won't be cheap.

Putting a straight pipe on there's illegal but a cheap way to fix it if you can find someone to do it. But that won't work if you have to pass smog.

If the miles are correct it might be a decent buy.

You can't believe what the seller says. You shouldn't believe the mileage. For 700 it's a money pit. Be prepared

  • Is it worth buying an older car with original miles? I'm looking at this 98 Honda Prelude Sh that has 20k original miles. They're asking 14 grand for this car which normally would turn me away. But I see similar preludes around my area that sell for about 5-6 grand with "reasonable" miles. (140k-170k). Now I'm having second thoughts, any suggestions? No doubt I'm in love with this prelude, but 14 grand is gut wrenching.
  • Is buying a used Toyota, Honda or Mazda car over 100,500 mileage worth it? Or is it too risky? I don't want to buy a car that will die as soon as I get it. I want it too last a while.
  • Is a $20,000 Honda S2000 07 worth buying? This man I know is selling his Honda s2000 year 2007 for 20 grand. Is it worth buying? Everything's in good condition
  • Is it worth buying a used Chevy Volt with over 100K miles on it? The price is right, but is it worth it? I know I would have to install a power charging station which is an additional 1000 dollars. There's one for sale at 14,500 dollars… But most used Volts are around 23,000 dollars. My other two considerations are a new 2015 Honda Fit or a used Mark 6 VW Golf TDI I've seen people on youtube who average 120 mpg with the volt! One guy's was even 1000 mpg, I don't think he even brought it to the gas station since he bought the car!
