Did they give me a right estimate for repairs in my car?

I have a Honda Civic 2005 coupe… And the guy said that imma need a new thermostat, head gasket, and raidiator and it came out to 1,800. I looked up the parts and all together it's less than 500. Are they charging over 1,000 for just labor?

No one who has not seen the written estimate, with the breakdown for parts and for labor can answer this.

The parts for this repair are cheap but it does involve lots of labor. $1,800 is not unreasonable for this repair.

The head gasket is probably $1000 all by itself, even though the actual part is relatively cheap.

So why don't you buy the parts and install them yourself instead of paying those thieves? Nothing to it.

Why do you need a head gaskit, a radiator and a thermostat?

Did you include new head bolts? Don't know/care anything about Hondoos, but many engines require the head bolts to be replaced when the head is removed. If you think you can do it for $1300, go ahead and attempt it. There's a lot of labor required to replace head gaskets. If the mechanic is worth a damn, obviously he will have the heads milled or at least checked for flat and maybe the block too.

Check here for a local estimate but that price sounds fair to me. Don't forget about all the new fluids and filters that are required also - oil change and new coolant are a must, a timing belt at the same time would also be a good idea.

"imma need"?

You need a remedial English class is what you need.

Add head bolts, machine shop time and costs.
It is a lot of labour to chsnge a head gasket.

". Are they charging over 1,000 for just labor?"

The price you pay at rockauto or autozone is not the price your mechanic will charge. The mechanic marks up the parts to some extent. In this case the head will have to be machined, so the mechanic has to pay a machine shop to do it, he also has to pay to have the head physically transported to and from the machine shop, then there are the incidentals, like the head gasket replacement kit which will contain things like new head bolts, and then finally you to the actual labor.

The actual cost to you will be around $800 for parts ( a bit more if OEM parts are used) and around $1000 for labor which should book out to around 6-8 hours. Plus the machining of the head. It's is reasonable for the job in question. So yeah, $1800 is about right.
