Should I get a Jeep Compass or a Subaru Impreza?

I still have my first car, an 04 Honda Civic, and I did love it because it was so small and pretty reliable but I'm getting older now and it's awful in the snow and I need a car with 4WD for college and work. My mom told me to check out subarus and I found a great 2014 Impreza (it has AWD). Then my dad recommended a jeep compass because he thinks I should get an SUV. I really like both cars. I love the look and aesthetic of the jeep and I can really see myself in one but subarus are super safe cars and I drove one and they drive really well and it's a small car which I really wanted. Does anyone have any advice? Which car is better in the long run?

Go with whatever you can get the best deal on, used cars have to be well maintained to last long. Don't worry about the specific model, worry case by cases basis, if you find a Jeep Compass in great shape cheaper than the Impreza go for it, and make sure your check the car out thoroughly before buying.

Its hard to compare Jeep and Subaru, since its 2 totally different types of vehicle. Just decide which one you like more. I think Subi suits you better. A roomy interior, a commendable ride/handling balance and all-wheel drive make the 2014 Subaru Impreza a solid choice for an all-season compact sedan or hatchback. It has standard all-wheel drive; spacious interior; secure handling; compliant ride quality. It offers excellent year-round traction, good fuel economy, and in WRX form and impressive performance. First thing - a FWD car like your Civic will be fine in the snow if you put winter tires on it. People drive FWD cars in Buffalo - do you get more snow than that?

As to your other choices - the Compass is really no more of an SUV than an Impreza - they are both cars, neither are trucks. The Compass sitting a couple of inches higher doesn't do you any good, it's all for looks. Have you driven both? The Impreza is a far better vehicle. Try to find a favorable review on the Compass since it's introduction - you will struggle, I don't think there has ever been one from a reputable publication.
