2001 Honda CR-V Check Engine Light?

I have a 2001 Honda CR-V LX with 142,000 miles on it. I just bought the car from a private party about a week ago, and when I bought it, it had a check engine light on, but it didn't seem to phase the car or its driving at all. I took it to AutoZone and had the code run and it came back a P0301, which is a cylinder misfire detected. I took it to my mechanic and they ran the diagnostic and thought it was a coil, however when they inspected the car, everything had been replaced at 140,000 miles: spark plugs, distributor, etc. And they told me that at that point, they had nothing to go on. They cleared the code and told me if the engine light came back on, to bring it back.

That was yesterday. Today, while driving on a main road, the light came back on. Solid light, same as before. Tried the gas cap, it's not the problem. Called my mechanic and they said that it could be the spark plugs.

Is there anything that I could check before taking it back for them to test? I'd like for them to test the injector, spark plugs, fuel pressure, and check for vacuum leaks. Anything I can try or may be forgetting from that list? TIA.

If the ignition system has been checked and most parts were replaced at 140K, then the only few things left is to check the fuel injector at number 1, do a compression test and an engine cylinder leak down test to verify if the valves or the piston rings are any good. Then do a valves adjustment on the engine.

This is how to do a valve adjustment: Both on video and a link with pictures and instruction including tools:

You can also swap the injector from number 1 to another cylinder (#2, #3 or #4) and see if the misfire is followed to that cylinder.

Tell your technician to perform what I've said, he'll find out the cause of misfire on #1 cylinder. Providing there's nothing prevent to have good spark at number 1 like spark plug, spark plug cable, distributor cap & rotor etc.

E mail if you need more help or need to know more information. HTH

I would put money on your camshaft position sensor being faulty. I know on the civics it is on the top of the timing belt area on the side on the cylinder head. Not exactly sure where it is on your vehicle but would guess it would be in the same area. The last one I changed was about $60 for the OEM one on a 02 civic. Goo

  • Check engine light, open door light, and batterie light all came on and won't go off? 2000 Honda Odyssey I already had the altinator replaced it a month old. The batterie almost a year old. Would the belt need be changed or something else?
  • Honda CRV 2003-check engine light? My check engine light won't go off; it has only 40,000 miles on it (real mileage). I also bought a new gas cap--so that isn't it. Can't find my manual either. How do I reset it, I'm thinking it is for oil maintenance but that was changed 1500 miles ago. I'm trying to avoid a trip to the dealer. It runs great and the gauges don't indicate any problems--Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • 2001 honda civic check engine light goes on then turns off? I have a 2001 honda civic with high mileage. I just took it on for an oil change and put summer tires back on. A few days later the check engine light came on and then shut off and then came back on and goes on and off every few days. The car doesn't seem to be driving bad although it does seem to shake a little bit. What could this be?
