Can a 1998 honda civic engine fit in a 1997 honda civic ex?

Can a 1998 honda civic engine fit in a 1997 honda civic ex?

It depends on what the donor car is. Your car is originally an ex so it comes with a d16y8 vtec engine. If the donor car is an ex, the engine will bolt up and you can use your existing wiring harness. If your donor car is a dx or an lx, it comes with a d16y7 non vtec, the engine would bolt up to your car but it wouldn't work, you'll have to get a d16y7 ecu to run your engine. Vtec has been around since 90' or 91'.

Thumbs to Bryan but add to support. The first Civics with VTEc here in the States were the 1992 Civic Si and EX- which only came in a 4door in 1992. The vintage year looking at used the same engines from 1996-2000. Only thing is that the lesser models had a non-VTEC engine whereas the EX had the VTEC version of the same engine with more powe; So you need the ECU from the donor car to make a non-VTEc engine work in yours, as Bryan had said. The Si with the twin cam VTEC came for 1999-2000 model year but that's another story…

Yes. It will fit. They didn't change engine styles until 2001 when Honda introduced the V-Tech engine.
