How long do oil filters last?

So I'm doing an oil change on a Honda 4 cylinder. The car calls for synthetic so it's I'm expecting longer oil change intervals.

I keep reading that some of the basic Fram, Bosch, and STP oil filters only last 3500 miles or so before they begin to deteriorate.

Mobil 1, K&N, Royal Purple are all kinda expensive.

Can I use something like a Fram Extra Guard(store only carries these) or a Bosch Premium(not drive+) for 10k miles/1 year?

Added (1). my other option is a Napa Gold oil filter, but then it would mean I'm missing out on the oil change deal at Autozone.

If you are using synthetic oil, you need to get a high-quality filter specified for synthetic oil. They are designed to last as long as the oil itself, which can be a very long time indeed. I would be very surprised if Autozone doesn't carry these.

I never heard of name brand oil filters deteriorating. If you fill them with dirt, they don't work very well but they will be fine otherwise.

I use Fram Extra Guard filters most of the time.

It's not that they "deteriorate" (except the really basic Frams, Delco e-Cores, or generic/no-name filters, which actually can collapse and fall apart inside because of glue-and-paper construction and tin-foil thickness canisters). It's simply that the filtration medium in the cheapo filters can't trap and hold any more particles ("grit"). Furthermore, the cheap ones do not filter out the vast majority of the particles in the size that causes the most engine damage. Buy a better filter and your engine will last longer, period. You get what you pay for.

Personally and in my shop I use only the manufacturer's filter, or Mobil 1. The Bosch Distance Plus are extremely well made too. I would not consider $8 for a genuine Mercedes filter, or $10 for a Mobil 1 to be "kinda expensive" -- especially compared to the cost of less durability/efficiency, much less a new engine! But if you're gonna cheap out with a Fram, replace the filter only, at half the oil change interval if the oil is still clean.

They last much longer than 3500 miles. Follow the car manufacturer's recommendations and you'll be fine. I wouldn't go 10k miles on standard oil (synthetic wouldn't be a problem for me). Change the oil, change the filter at the same time.

  • How long will my Honda shadow 600 last? I just bought a 1995 Honda Shadow VLX 600. It has 24 thousand miles on it, got it for 1500$. It has no problems, no leaks, clean, no rust, been garage kept, regular oil changes, runs like a spanked monkey. Now i'm wondering if it will make 5000 more miles, or 30,000 more. What do bikes regularly make it to?
  • How long do you think a Honda Elite 50cc scooter last? I found a 1998 honda elite on craigslit in pretty good condition. Its pretty old but seems like it runs well. I'm not sure how many miles are on it but how many do you think it runs? How many miles should it be able to run*
