5th & 6th gear issues, motorcycle?

I have a 1984 Honda Magna 750. I noticed a month or two ago that 6th gear wasn't engaging. Then this weekend I noticed that 5th seemed to not be fully engaging. Wondering if anyone has an idea of what is wrong. Or can point me in the right direction.

Hi what i find amazing is what some one think start after over 30 years use that a gearbox should just go on for ever.

You will need to add more details to what is happening when you shift into 5th and 6th.
Like does it pop out of 5th gear? Or does it decrease speed at the same/or more RPM?

And what does it do in 6th gear? A giant VOID? Nothing?

I suggest you visit the site below this post, register with their forum and post your question. There's an amazing amount of talent and knowledge there, all dedicated to the Honda V4 and the Yamaha VMax, and your questions will be answered. It's an amazing resource, and as an owner of a 1985 Magna V42, I have found it to be very valuable in the extreme. However, if you go this route (which I suggest you do), you must provide the forum with more information than you did us. If you don't, the ones who bother to reply will say, "What, do you expect us to read your mind?" The more information your provide, the better.

Have you looked in the oil for metal flakes which indicate your bearings are dying? Have you filtered the oil through a rag or coffee filter? Have you stuck a magnet through the oil drain orifice to see what's in the goo at the bottom of your oil pan? Have you installed an aftermarket drain plug with a magnet? Have you cut open your oil filter to look for metal flakes?

Have you tried raising the rear wheel with the engine off, rotating the rear wheel by hand, and hand-shifting the transmission up and down all six gears? What does it feel like? Does it go smoothly into each gear? Do you feel grinding? Have you tried the same thing with the spark plugs out?

Why ain't ya tried the obvious, easy stuff, dude?

Hi, Jacob I would take it to your local shop/dealer and have a technician take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your issue and repair cost.

6th is better

  • My 1999 manual honda prelude does not shift into 5th gear or reverse smoothly? My gears are smooth from 1-4 but then takes a lot of effort to go to 5th or reverse. Also when you get out of 5th or reverse it doesn't go straight into neutral like a normal manual car. They still work but it is very annoying that i have to push it into the gears and pull them out. What could the issue be? Transmission? Shift box? I plan on changing to a short throw shifter in the future.
  • Is the 1985 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft compatible with the 86-2001 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft? I have a 1985 CR 500 and the water pump gear shaft broke. It has been discontinued from Honda, and no one else has it. It is a metal gear. The one's for the 1986-2001 CR 500 are plastic. If I have to use plastic, I will. However, I prefer not to. If anyone knows where I can get the OEM 1985 Honda CR 500 gear shaft, I would forever be grateful.
  • Canadian 6th gen. Honda civic Si? I was told that the 6th gen. Only comes with sohc d16 vtec engine. I was under the impression that my car was not vtec. Is this possible?
  • 3rd gear grinds? Replace gear box? 3rd gear grinds? So I bought this '98 honda civic cx(213,000miles) and sometimes the 3rd gear grinds a bit. What would be the cause of it? Clutch slipping? Also the steering wheel shakes when I broke after a certain speed(warped rotors or possibly wheel alignment is needed?) And lastly when downshifting 5th to 4th gear I have to shift slow or else it grids. What could be the problems in your opinion and how much would each cost
