Motorcycle dies when I turn off the choke?
I don't know much about motorcycles just started learning how to ride from my boyfriend. I decided I'd ride my motorcycle to the store today to get some more experience so I started it and let it run for a few mins with the choke on and then when I took the choke off it just died. Could that happen if it needs gas? It has some gas in the tank but may be low. I'm hoping it's nothing serious. It's a Honda Rebel 250
Try putting the fuel tap onto Reserve &see if it will run. (Also quite possible it hadn't warmed up enough to not need the choke)
Make sure it has enough fuel, then you have either a vacuum leak between the carb and intake or a clogged idle jet in the carb - I'm betting on the latter.
Did you move the fuel petcock to the RESERVE position?
Fill the petrol (gas) tank and if the problem persists it's probably due to a blocked pilot jet in the carb. Remove and blow out the jets with an airline or use a soft bristle from a brush. Never use wire!
Also check the gas-cap bleed hole and fuel filter before proceeding with carburettor cleaning. If the petrol is not flowing freely that's your problem. If is does flow freely after you remove the pipe at the carb then proceed with carb dismantle and jet clean, plus check the float level. A workshop manual would be worth acquiring before you grab your spanners and, if you do all that, why not replace the spark plugs, oil/filter and air filter to make sure everything is covered?
PS… Check the condition of the carb manifold gasket if you undertake this procedure. False air causes a weak mixture and would need the choke to enrich it.
Sounds like a fuel Mixture problem or Most likely lack of Fuel
the choke causes the engine to suck harder result more fuel No choke less fuel spray WD 40 around carby Gaskets to see if you have an air leak
Note I had problems with My BMW R 65 1987 and my problem with stalling when the choke was turned off was not keeping it on long enough it was winter time
Please read what Mistress of Morality has to say she also owns Motorcycles ·
There's a youtube video about this very issue.
The Yammer does that when only firing on one cyl. Pull the wires and see.
Sounds like maybe the engine is not warm enough yet. You can put the choke half off and ride that way to the store without a problem. By the time you do your thing at the store chances are good you can then put the choke in all the way and start the bike and it will idle. If you forget and don't do that, still no problem. Bike is just riding with a little richer mixture than it needs but IT WILL SURVIVE.
The twins take awhile to warm up but a mile or so down the road you can reach under and take the choke off. My twins did the stall out when I took the choke off too early, so leaving it alone did not hurt it. You really do not feel a performance difference.
Carb needs to be cleaned or rebuilt.
- Test light on positive lead on starter relay comes on when the motorcycle is off, when bike key is turn on, test light is off? Does this mean starter relay is bad? I'm trying to diagnose my electrical problem on a honda cbr f4. The lights turned on but when I tried to start bike all power shut off and now nothing powers on.
- Motorcycle choke stopped working suddenly? I have a 1986 Honda rebel 450 that has never had a problem starting. I always use the choke if its cold and its always worked perfectly. However, the today when the bike was running, i put the choke on to see if it was working and it had no effect on the idle whatsoever. I now can't start my bike easily since the choke doesn't work. Does this sound like a bad choke cable? Is a choke cable the same as a throttle cable? I can't find them anywhere.
- Motorcycle choke not working? My choke stopped working on my 86 Honda rebel 450. Someone was messing with it the other day and found out that if you tug one of the cables, the choke on the carb opens up and is the same thing as applying the choke the regular way. The problem is, i can't figure out what he was doing and how he go the chok to open up. Any ideas what he could have done?
- Honda CRF 150F won't run without choke? 2009 Honda CRF 150F dirtbike, after over an hour riding I still can't turn off the choke. The bike just bogs and shuts off. Will run on half choke.
