Riding a motorcycle at 17?
Hi, I'm almost 17 and I'm wanting to start riding a bike. I didn't do anything at 16 because, I didn't particularly want to ride a moped. So the deal is, I'm kind of confused with the new law that came in in January of 2013.
Am I correct in saying that what I have to do is:
Take a CBT, theory test and a practical test on a moped.
Then at this point (once I'm 17) I can ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc with L plates?
At this point I can take another theory and practical test? I then can have my 125cc without L plates and can carry a passenger? - This is the area that seems most confusing for me.
I also am confused by all the power to weight ratio stuff.
The bike I'm wanting to ride will be a Honda Cbr 125. It will be either 2012, 2013, or the 1014 model, so would I be able to ride this with the restrictions?
All you need is the provisional license when you reach 17 your license will be sent to you with the vehicles you can drive/ride this most likely will be group b, am, a (car moped motorbike)as you will be 17 there will be restrictions on the motorbike side such as light motorbikes only (age and engine size related)
Then you need the cbt this lasts the 2 years you can ride on the road with l plates no passengers no motorways and at the end of 2 years do the cbt again or,
you can do cbt and theory (which also lasts 2years)and practical test this gets you the full license with the restriction group A1 125cc max. However if you pass atest on the 125 thats all you can drive i'm afraid.
i would ride the 125 on l plates for 2 years then on reaching 19 you can start learning on the bigger bike and pass your test on this
To ride a 125cc (14.6BHP MAX) with L plates, all you need to do is complete a CBT (After gaining your provisional license). As you're 17 years old, you are entitled to ride a 125cc. You can't ride over 125cc however, you'll need a full motorcycle license (Minimum A2) to ride anything above.
The only time you will need to do the theory test is when you want to pass the full motorcycle test.
There are 3 categories to the motorcycle test; A1, A2 & A.
A1: You can take this at 17 years old, on your own 125cc motorcycle. After completion, you can ride a maximum of 125cc with no more than 14.6BHP (Just like the CBT), but you can ride it without L plates, use motorways and carry passengers.
A2: You can take this at 19 years old, through a DAS course. These courses are around 1 week long, and include one to one training, bike hire, gear hire, insurance, all test fees, insurance, fuel etc etc. After passing the A2, you can ride a motorcycle up to 46.6BHP. A bike with more power than that can be restricted to that mark, but must not produce over 93BHP in its original state.
A: You can take this at 24 years old straight away, or you can take it once you have held the A2 license for a minimum of 2 years. The 'A' category license is un-restricted, you can ride any sized motorcycle you want. IF you choose to take it at 24 years old, then a DAS course is involved. However, I think that if you choose to take it after 2 years of holding the A2 category license, then all you would need to do is the practical parts of the test (Module 1 & 2), on a bigger CC bike. It would seem pointless to undergo all of the training again.
You will not need to complete another theory for each license category, the theory counts for all.
The CBR125 is learner legal, you can ride it on a CBT.
WRONG
You just need to take the CBT then you can slap on some L plates and go
Yopu only ever do the theory and hazard if you want to do a full licence test which at 17 is poor as you can still then only ride up to 125cc
At 19 you can go for a limited test on an up to 47bhp bike and then after 2 years of having that you can upgrade with another test to an unlimited bike
Yes the CBR is suitable for a learner 1254 as it is under the power restriction etc
First you need to Get Group A1 (Light Motor Bike) on your Licence. You then have to complete a 1 day Compulsory Basic Training course to Validate it. The Pass Certificate will last for 2 years. You can now ride by yourself on the public Highway with "L" Plates and continue to Learn. Next thing during that 2 years (when you are ready) is the Motor Bike Based Theory test. Then the A1 Driving test. If you do not get your full Licence before the CBT expires you are off the road until you pass another CBT.
The Group A1 is No more than 125 cc and No more than 11 kW. Road legal ones will comply or they are not Group A1 Motor Bikes.
Until you get your Full A1 licence you can't carry a Pillion.

- Which motorcycle will be suitable for a beginner with little riding experience? I just recently took the MSF course and got my motorcycle endorsement. I want a bike I can ride for a year or two then eventually move to a cbr600rr. I plan to do some highway riding and computing within town. I'm 6'1 152 pounds, base on what I told you will you recommend the kawasaki ninja 300, the Yamaha R3, or the Honda cbr500r?
- What are the dangers of riding a dirt bike shirtless? I was ready to ride my dirtbike all geared up (pants, helmet, boots, etc.) besides a shirt. I have an 80cc honda and a pretty skilled driver. However my father came out and yelled for me to stop and made me put on a long sleeve shirt. Was this right to do? Should he have just let me ride or was he right?
- Is riding with two pillion bad for a two wheeler vehical? I own a new Honda activa scooter, (1st servicing is not done yet). I wanted to know is riding with more than 1 pillion bad for the vehical. If yes then how can it damage the vehical and how much weight is normal. (Because i ll be needing my activa to carry some luggage as well)
- What damage is possible from a construction cone riding under the front portion under the car? I was traveling doing about 55 mph and could not swerve to avoid hitting a construction cone. It hit under my car and dragged until I could pull over and pry it loose. I could not see too well under the car. I have a Honda Fit
