Riding motorcycles at 14?

Check this out first as I make reference to it several times: http://www.dmv.org/al-alabama/motorcycle-license.php

Hi, I live in Alabama and recently discovered that you can obtain a "Motor Driven Cycle" license when you are only 14 with a lot of restrictions. I have looked at a few bikes and can find only 1-2 that meet the requirements that are not like tiny scooters. I know that's somewhat the point of the 200lb weight limit, so 14 years olds are not riding around Harleys, but I wanted a motorcycle style bike if possible (that isn't a dirtbike) with gears etc., not a big scooter fan. If someone could make a small list of bikes that meet the restrictions of the license it would be really appreciated. I found a couple of bikes that meet every requirement except the weight limit (is this a big deal? Not asking you to advocate breaking the law but would a cop really weigh your bike if an issue arose if it was a small bike and didn't look like a full size street bike?) bikes that I found are listed below, Thanks!

Bikes:
Kawasaki Eliminator: http://en.wikipedia.org/...Eliminator
Honda Grom: http://motorcycle.honda.ca/sport/grom
Honda Older 125 enduro
Yamaha MT-125

All those bikes are about 14 hp. 5 hp is 50 to 90 cc bike.

Looks like you're gonna be stuck with what we call a "moped", or a cheap scooter.
The 200 lb weight limit kills all chances of anything else.
Even the cheap imports weigh too much.
All the ones you listed above are out due to weight, and probably horsepower as well.
Note: I don't think that Yamaha is even available in the States - that's a european site you referenced.

A 'motor-driven cycle' is not a motorcycle. They sound similar but they're totally different things. A motor-driven cycle is a moped, i.e. A bicycle with a little 50-80cc motor on it, or else the very smallest category of motorscooter (like a Honda Ruckus). Or a 'go-ped', like a kick-scooter only with a little motor on it. (This is why the definition of 'motorcycle' includes a seat! Motor-driven cycles don't need seats!)

All the models you listed are motorcycles, not motor-driven cycles. 5 hp is really minuscule, like a chainsaw engine.

  • Which motorcycle will be suitable for a beginner with little riding experience? I just recently took the MSF course and got my motorcycle endorsement. I want a bike I can ride for a year or two then eventually move to a cbr600rr. I plan to do some highway riding and computing within town. I'm 6'1 152 pounds, base on what I told you will you recommend the kawasaki ninja 300, the Yamaha R3, or the Honda cbr500r?
  • What are the dangers of riding a dirt bike shirtless? I was ready to ride my dirtbike all geared up (pants, helmet, boots, etc.) besides a shirt. I have an 80cc honda and a pretty skilled driver. However my father came out and yelled for me to stop and made me put on a long sleeve shirt. Was this right to do? Should he have just let me ride or was he right?
  • Is riding with two pillion bad for a two wheeler vehical? I own a new Honda activa scooter, (1st servicing is not done yet). I wanted to know is riding with more than 1 pillion bad for the vehical. If yes then how can it damage the vehical and how much weight is normal. (Because i ll be needing my activa to carry some luggage as well)
  • What damage is possible from a construction cone riding under the front portion under the car? I was traveling doing about 55 mph and could not swerve to avoid hitting a construction cone. It hit under my car and dragged until I could pull over and pry it loose. I could not see too well under the car. I have a Honda Fit
