What did I do wrong with my motorcycle carburetor?

Ok, so imma tell you my problems from the beginning. I have a Honda Rebel CMXC 250 1996 on a 1997 chassis/frame (completely rebuilt myself). So I got brand new twin carburetors that I put on myself (hoping I put the correct tubes on the correct connections which I'm sure I did since the bike fired up fast). It ran STRONG for a good 5 minutes. Then it started bang… Then cough and sputter and slowly sound like its having trouble breathing, it was leaking gas out of the intake! Then it started idling going a lot weaker and slower then it wouldn't exceed 45 mph and had trouble breathing and pushing! I literally prayed to god that I would make it back! Lol. Now I thought that I would have to adjust the floats so I tried that in both directions… Why won't it start again! Why was it leaking gas (floats aren't stuck)? And WHY did this happen before? Please no criticisms, don't ask why or insult me, I've never done this before, I have no guidance, this is my first bike and I'm barely 20. Just help me. I want to fix my bike tomorrow!

You say your sure you properly connected all hoses on the carbs? Did you use a shop manual? Go over what you did and refer to a shop manual. I'm not very familiar with that bike. But I wonder if everything is indeed properly installed. Since you say they are brand new carbs.

The gas leak can be:
Any foreign material holding the float needle open - dirt, bad gas, rust from inside the tank.
Open the gas cap and look in the tank.
Any rust or foreign debris, clean the tank, clean the carburetors again and install an inline fuel filter.
The drain screws might be leaking.
Remove the float bowls and fill them with gas to see if there are any leaks.

Install new spark plugs.
They are cheaper than doing an engine over haul.

Inspect the air cleaner.

  • What should I go with? Single carburetor or twin? I'm trying to get my honda rebel ip and running but can't find another carburetor anywhere! Anywhere that has it assembled anyway. But on ebay, they have a surplus of twin carburetors for cheaper than the single. Should I get the twin? What differences will there be if I do?
  • What does each one of these go to on the Honda carburetor? It's a 2006 Honda trx 90 cc quad and I'm trying to put a new carb on it because it was missing the carb when I got it. I know you stick the fuel line to one but i don't know if it's the top or bottom also what tube goes on the other one? Very confused please help.
  • Pilot jet unscrewed but stuck in carburetor? I'm rejetting my 2006 Honda Crf250x and I'm having trouble getting the Pilot jet out. It turns freely with a flat head screwdriver and if I tip the carb upside down it will fall partly out, but I can't get it to come all the way out even if I pull on it with a pair of tweezers. I can't take the float bowl off at the moment because the previous owners has mangled the heads of the screws. Does anyone know what the jet could be catching on or have any suggestions?
  • How should i convert the carburetor engine body to MPFI? I have Honda CBR 600 sports bike engine,1992 model of carburetor engine, I want to convert it into MPFI engine. How should I convert it? Please suggest me,…
