What inexspensive bike to buy?

Okay, I think I convinced my wife to let me (us) get a motorcycle. I owned 11 dirt bikes off all sizes my whole life, and thought a street bike is okay.

I want to keep riding to a minimum, as we all know it is dangerous.

I want a comfortable, cruising bike. Something small. I'm only 5'5" 170.

I have rode a 1995 Honda rebel. It was the 250, but I would only want the 450.

I also have looked into a Honda Shadow 650. Of those two what are the pros and cons? Is one vs the other different in the handling. The power of the 650 seems obvious.

Can anyone suggest anything? Our total weight for two people would be 280

Inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to run, inexpensive to insure, light, quick, good looking: A Suzuki LS650 aka Savage aka S40. (S40: 380 pounds, Dawn's M50: 590 pounds (which is an 800), Zaphod's PC800: 640 pounds) The S40 can do 85+ mph, gives 60-65 mpg cruising 65-70mph.

For 2k youre just going to get a pile of junk. But if you can scrounge up around 4 a suzuki m50 is hard to beat and you can get a decent shape bike for around 4. The 'power' of a V twin medium size cruiser doesn't even go on the same chart of an inline 4 or other bike of similar CC. The power delivery is way different. 650 is probably too small to be hauling around your old lady. An 800 v twin like the suzuki would be good though…
