Would you recommend a Honda CBF 250?
It's like an er5 type bike, nice simple bike for about a grand s/hand. Have you had/ridden one?
I think they're okay for a novice, but if you are used to a 500 you may find it underpowered.
A CBF500 would be a better bet and you have renowned Honda reliability.
