Catalytic converter broken

I have a 2003 Honda Civic. I believe my catalytic converter has broken up inside since every now and then I hear rattles and the engine light came on. I was trying to see what my options were. I know it is not a part that the car needs to run however I don't want my engine to get damaged due to clogged up exhaust. But it is a pretty expensive part. I just need advice on wether I should clean it out with cleaner and chill or would that be a waste of time and I should just replace it?

P.S. I'm a broke college student, I'm trying to see whatever is more cost effective. But if you guys think it should be replaced I understand. Which begs the question I've seen some aftermarket cheap cats, are they worth it?

Sorry for the long story and a big thank you to whomever chooses to answer this.

You can't clean it if it's rattling and the cheap aftermarket units don't work for very long. If you can find a reasonably priced California approved or a low mileage used one, that would be best.

If the check engine light is lit in the vehicle, then instead of guessing, you need to have a shop attach an OBD code reader and see if the catalytic converter is what is causing the CEL or something else

  • Is my catalytic converter the problem? I have a Honda civic 91 and its a 4th gen sedan. The problem with it is that the engine cranks but it won't start. I checked the spark plugs and they are all good. Battery has been recently replaced. What i don't get is why it starts up at times and doesn't. Could it be by any chance the catalytic converter that's ruined? I checked it recently, it wants to start but it chokes.
  • How could I put a catalytic converter on a Honda civic 2000? OK this honda civic 2000 hatchback does not have a catalytic converter. Is there anyway I could get it new and installed without a problem? My car has a pipe instead of a catalytic converter and it I need it to put the oxygen sensor on it.
  • Does a Honda civic 2000 waste more has without a catalytic converter? I have a Honda civic 2000 without a cat and has a pipe instead, it needs the secondary oxygen sensor. But I was wondering if the catalytic converter affects the gas usage an anyway?
  • Do honda civic 2000 have catalytic converter? OK I was wondering if the honda civic 2000 should have two oxygen sensors. But the problem is all the honda civics that are the same only have one and also doesn't have a catalytic converter. Is this a problem? I'm afraid this is the reason why the car wastes a lot of gas.
