Cost of rebuiding a 91 honda civic 4 speed manual transmission?

I'm planning of rebuild the engine and I want every major component to be as reliable as possible.

My current 4 speed manual transmission is working flawlessly, sometime it is a bit difficult to get in reverse. But I think it is normal. My concern is if I have a rebuild engine and a new clutch, I would like a new/reman transmission to match reliability.

Option 1: reman 5 speed tranny, which would run about $700. It is a little too much for my budget. And what am i going to do with the old 4 speed tranny?

Option 2: Rebuild myself. Rebuild kit is about $200. Question is if I have time and what if I mess up? Is it easy to do? Anybody has done that? Looks like you will have to replace a few bearings, seals and sychronizers.

Option 3: Pay shop to rebuild it. Anybody knows how much it would cost?

Option 4: Leave the current transmission. Worry about it when it goes bad… I don't know if I like this option. I want get everyting done at one shot and I don't have to worry about it latter…

What's your opinion?

If this were my car: Inspect the tranny for any leaks, if the front & rear seals are not leaking, replace the trans oil and drive it till it needs attention. If either seal is leaking, the bushings are likely worn causing the leak so I'd put a reman in there. Replacing the seals won't last long. Don't rebuild it yourself, get a reman with a warranty.
Replace the radiator no matter what, unless it's less than 18 months. Old or less.

1) did you check junkyard price for the 5 speed. The 4 speed either junk that or try selling it to put the money towards the 5 speed
2) will need a few special tools and a ten ton press to take bearings off shafts and final drive
3) won't know price till its opened and parts list made out might just need bearing seal kit plus shop labor rate. Which varies between shops
4) leave the transmission alone. Why fix what isn't broken
5) find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help

All I would do is check the shift bushing at the bottom of the shift lever under the car and replace it. They usually seize up and cause problems. Why waste money on a 1991 vehicle if the tranny is working?!
