Does this sound like a faulty O2 sensor?

No check engine light, just wondering if my O2 sensors could be on their way out.

Rough idle, acceleration from idle is very poor. Idling has VERY bad bursts in warm weather, and the acceleration is twice as bad when it's warm outside (anything over 60 degrees F).

No vacuum leaks, throttle body is clean. I'm thinking of replacing both O2 sensors as preventative maintenance anyway but am curious if they could be my issue.

I know I don't have a CEL but I've heard O2s can definitely be faulty with no CEL.

Added (1). Car is a 2012 Honda Civic, 180k miles.

Hi so you think my using this idea it removes the possibility of some thing more serious with the engine. Sorry too disappoint you the chances are this is more about a worn engine or something else mechanical wear has more to do with your problems than just a sensor or two.

The car is running rich or lean. Replace the air and fuel filter (if the fuel filter is not inside the tank) and the PCV valve.

Get a fuel pressure tester and check fuel pressure and fuel volume with key on, engine off and engine running and revving the engine. Compare to values in a service manual. Replace fuel pump if the pressure is low. Get the injectors cleaned. Put a blocking plate on the EGR valve and check the idling at idle.

If there's no improvement or if there are no issues with the tests, it is time to see a mechanic with a scan tool and check fuel trims and sensor live data.

Heck most check engine lights are o2 sensors sounds like bad fuel delivery. Check your pump and filters, and I like to replace spark plugs while I'm at it just in case. If it's not those the move onto ignition, check your ignition coil, rotor, ect… But if your 02 sensor is cheep and easy I would still just start with that.

Wow that is a lot of miles on a 2012, so obviously a lot of highway driving. Do you know if the oil changes were done on a reasonable schedule? If so, my first guess is the O2 sensors are OK.
The tolerance levels on a 2012 are very tight, so if the sensor is bad you should get a CEL. Even if not, then with a bad o2 sensor car will usually run lean, but that would not be the symptoms you state. Just my guess.

My first point is, don't guess, you can waste a lot of time and money. I'm fairly sure that the dealer or a honda focused shop and can pull data from the computer and find out exactly what is off.

If these are overdue then try them anyway, plugs and wires, fuel filter and air filter. Let tank run down to 1/8 tank and put in two bottles of Techron, Drive til tank at empty and then add 3 gallons of gas, when close to E then put in what ever amount you like. This might help clear clogged fuel injector.

You could have a dirty or bad MAF, or a bad coil pack.

I CAN't HEAR IT FORM HERE!
Any sensor can be slightly erratic and not set a code. O2 sensor doesn't play any effect at initial acceleration though it's more a reactionary type thing in this instance. I'd look at TPS.MAF. Does the CTS correspond to actual temperatures?

You heard wrong and replacing 02 sensors as "preventive maintenance" is asinine. You obviously have no smarts when it comes to auto mechanics and it's people like you that keep guessing at what there problem is and waste all their money throwing parts at the vehicle until you're broke and can't afford to have a mechanic diagnose and repair your vehicle correctly. I've seen this a million times and you're one of these idiots. Have fun knobing around.

Sounds weird! Most o2 sensors will throw a code! You might try checking for any vacuum leaks like around the intake for example and check for any vacuum hoses that might be broke!

  • Engine light on, o2 sensor bad, knocing sound from top of engine? Hi, i have honda prelude 98.manual. The problem started with knocing sound from engine for few days! Then all of sudden engine check light comes on! I got engine light checked! It comes o2 sensor bad! Car rpm is really low now touches zero and get back to 200/300 when in neutral
  • Help me! Code P2A00 Oxygen sensor circuit range/performance bank 1 Sensor 1 2008 honda Crv ex? I have an 2008 Honda crv Ex and this code came up "Code "P2A00" Oxygen sensor circuit range/performance bank 1 Sensor 1 i want to replace it myself because i know its simple and the dealer wants to charge me over $300 and i can do it for half the cost when i looked it, it has two sensors together one closer to the engine and the other a bit more behind it i don't know with of the two it is.
  • My honda civic 04 automatic makes a rattle like sound when I turn the key off? I noticed that when i turn the key to the off position some where under my streering wheel I can here a little rattle like sound. It last about 1- 2 seconds (i hear the usual normal cooling down sound the engine makes after I turn it off. So I don't think its the engine cooling down ) Any ideas what it could be?
  • Does this sound like I got good deal? I found a 2008 Honda Civic on Craigslist for $5,900. I talked the seller down to $5,000 and the car only has 105k miles on it. It does have a salvage title but it's not for anything too serious.
