Is a 98 Honda Civic DX hatchback a good car?

I just want to know if these cars are as reliable as I have been lead to believe and have read. I have been doing research on these cars and so far not much negative info is out there. It has a stock engine, the d16y7 I believe. I want it for daily driver and it has 120k miles on it now. At what mileage should I change the timing belt, radiator, water pump ect. Its for sale for 5k. It has aftermarket wheels and suspension. The wheels, coilovers, rear control arms support brace and doube din touch screen stereo are easily $2500 alone. The car is super clean! Interior is more that great! Is it a good deal?

Hondas are generally very reliable cars and are also relatively cheap to fix if/when something goes wrong.

Timing belt changes are a 100,000 mile replacement. Some people do it a lot earlier. In addition to how many miles, WHEN it was last replaced is also important. If the timing belt hasn't been changed, keep in mind that it is a costly maintenance item because of the labor involved. It also makes sense to change the water pump while doing the timing belt. The radiator's a weird one. They can vary in when to change them. Look at it and see if you can spot any leaks, cracks or corrosion, in which case replace it.

Aftermarket wheels and modified suspension would indicate to me that the car is NOT such a great deal. The previous owner was apparently into high performance driving, and may have abused the vehicle to the point where it's not as reliable as it would be in original condition. The TIMING BELT should be changed every 60,000 miles, and the rest should be changed on condition… That means not until it fails.

Radiator and water pump might last forever - same with timing belt

I had a 1997 Civic hatchback for 10 years and it never gave me any trouble.
It's a great little car, look after it and it will last you a while.
