Will my car be ok being parked up for 6 months?
I have a Honda Civic EP2 VTEC sport. I have just been banned from driving for 6 months so I have declared it off road and parked it in my garage. I will start it every other day and leave it running for a while but I was just wondering if things will start to seize up etc.
Will it be better if I get someone else insured on it, pay for tax etc. So they can maybe drive it around every other week?
6 Months is NOTHING to park a car… I do it every winter for my " summer car "… Park it,… Start it ou once a Month,… It will be fine,… After all, a new car might sit on the dealers lot " all summer"
Nothing will happen to your vehicle in six months and as for someone else driving it around for you my advice is don't do it. Starting once a week or two is enough and you should not leave it in the garage while it is running, lots of people die that way.
It won't suffer, but it will help if you can just run it up and down your drive, (if that's possible) to give the running gear some exercise. When you start it, leave it to run long enough to get hot and to recharge the battery.
There's a lot of difference between a new car and a car a few years old when it comes to laying up, if you can get a friend to drive every couple of weeks for 30 mins fine… A month an hour… If not. Get all 4 wheels of floor so no weight on wheels… You need to support it under suspension. Not body… And LEAVE HANDBRAKE OFF
No need to start it every other day. Every 2 weeks is fine. Leave the handbrake off and drive it out of the garage and back in when it the weather is fine. Do not go onto the road.
You will need to get fresh fuel delivered by a friend.
When it is due back on the road get it insured and taxed and get a garage to pick it up for a service.
The big risk areas are the clutch sticking and the handbrake.
Try not to take it outside when wet. If you can leave the garage open when the weather is nice to keep the car aired.
A battery charger is useful.
It is better to use the car than let it sit. If you do leave the car you should jack it up so the tires are off the ground. They can get flat spots on them from sitting too long.
Don't start it every other day. Once a week or every two weeks is plenty. And run till the temperature gauge is up to normal.
It will not be ok if you start it every other day. Each time you start a car and don't drive it anywhere, the battery loses a little bit of charge. Every other day for six months is approximately 90 starts. A car battery can't start a car that many times without the car being driven somewhere. You'll need to jumpstart it or use a battery charger.
It should be ok if you start at least once a month.
- Paying for Honda Loaner Car From Dealership while Paint Recall is Being Fixed? I'm going to be paying $33/day for (1 to 2 weeks) for a loaner car from my honda dealership while its away in the shop. Is there any flexibility in picking what car I want or do they automatically assign me a car. I feel like since i'm paying i should be able to pick what car I want, or even pay a little more for something nicer?
- How to upgrade my a car without being a ricer? I want to buy a Honda Del Sol or a Acura Integra and put upgrades on either car as time goes on, but I want don't want to be or be known a ricer, I was also considering Buying a 1993 -2002 Chevy Camaro, But The only things I know I want to do for sure is a turbo and a paint job and maybe a a body kit ( Not an obnoxious body kit ).
- Does power steering fluid get hot if the car is just running and the steering isn't being used? If the pump is just spinning, recirculating fluid and nothing else… Would it still get hot? I had to bypass the pump from the rack and have the fluid recirculate. Would the pump get hot from just spinning? I know 8th gen Honda's don't have a cooler for the power steering anyways.
