Do I need to replace my catalytic converter?
Do I need to replace my catalytic converter? - 1
Added (1). I've got a 2001 Honda CRV w/ ~185,000K on it. Heard a rattling sound and had loss of acceleration power. I took it to a mechanic and he said that I needed to replace the catalytic converter or it would get clogged and could blast out a valve. Also, exhaust system has rust so he says he needs to replace the whole thing from the cat back… Please advise.
Added (2). I'm mainly concerned with the blowing up the engine or starting a fire. How likely are either of these to happen?
If your car no longer passes emissions testing, and if the converter is at fault
That mechanic is stretching the truth a bit… A cat converter can and will get clogged up but not likely to cause any engine damage if it's repaired soon; the vehicle would have a check engine light lit before any major damage would happen… As far as the rest of the exhaust pipes needing to be replaced - if that shop has a lift, then have the mechanic put your vehicle on the lift so that you can see for yourself if the pipe needs to be replaced or not… You should also get 2 other estimates for the work needed and the costs
I think you should get a second opinion. Cats don't usually die of old age anymore, they are killed…
Have a shop do a back pressure test to determine if your cat. Has melted down and restricting your exhaust.
- Is my catalytic converter the problem? I have a Honda civic 91 and its a 4th gen sedan. The problem with it is that the engine cranks but it won't start. I checked the spark plugs and they are all good. Battery has been recently replaced. What i don't get is why it starts up at times and doesn't. Could it be by any chance the catalytic converter that's ruined? I checked it recently, it wants to start but it chokes.
- Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
- 05 Honda civic catalytic converter replacement do I need new 02 sensors also? - Why is my catalytic converter smoking? 1993 Honda Accord LX (F22a1) 4AT At idle the car is about 1500 rpm cold all the way up until warm. But at idle it vibrates a little, with the air on idle drops to 500rpm and the car shakes violently. Also my dizzy is leaking oil. Every so often the engine has a sputter or misfire. Light light pinging noise. I'm sure it's out of time. My ignition anyway. I smell gas when the car is off and after driving it my catalytic converter is smoking. Really stumped here.
