Is it a bad idea to buy a used car that isn't completely stock?

So I found this 2006 Acura TL at a dealership nearby. It's an official Acura dealership that has great reviews all around. However the car just seems shady to me. It seems to be in great exterior condition, and it has low miles (50k), however it looks like the previous owner did some work to it. I'm leery of used cars that aren't stock. There appears to be a body kit on the exterior and tinted windows, besides that the car isn't lowered and the wheels and rims appear to be factory original. There also appears to be a button missing from the door panel in one of the photos. I'm worried about the previous owner altering the factory suspension and possibly doing things to the car that may be prone to failure later in the car's life and basically not taking proper care of it. This car seems perfect for me, matches my exact price point, low miles, has all the features I wanted, has the color I wanted, comes from the Honda/Acura family which is of high importance to me. However I want this car to last a long time and I'm just leery about the previous owner tinkering with it in any way. I value used cars that were simply driven; not tinkered with or altered in any way. Seems like a great car but these things are holding me back. What do you think?

When it comes to modded cars, I usually assume that the previous owner(s) focused more on aftermarket parts instead of general maintenance unless there are physical documents/records indicating that they did maintain it. If there isn't any documentation of full service history, don't waste your time, no matter how tempting it is.

This is why modifying a vehicle often decreases its resale potential.

It depends on how it was modified. If it's cosmetic stuff only, who cares. In your situation, you should take it to a reliable mechanic to take a look at it, just like any used car.

  • Would it be, a bad idea for me to try and fix a blown head gasket? Its for a honda. Stock d16 aftermarket rims and is 1500 with a blown head gasket. My dad is the best honda mechanic in my town. He would be guiding me through it. Also the car had 137k miles and good paint. How much would it be worth if it was fixed?
  • Will my car make it cross country? Can anyone who knows about cars tell me if this is a bad idea? I want to drive to colorado to stay for a few weeks and don't want to fly it will be about.a 1300 mile journey I have a 2002 Honda oddessey tht has 242k miles on it but its been babied its whole life and has a few new parts including a new transmission its seems to drive fine I was just wondering if that seems like a stupid or risky idea to drive it that far
  • Muffler Deleting a stock 08 grand prix good or bad? I have a stock 3.8 V6 Grand Prix and want it to sound like a stronger car and not a Honda would a muffler delete be good or will I have to do more like a resonator delete too. And if I were to do the muffler delete what would be the cheapest most effective way to do it. I'm on a very tight budget so preferably DIY.
  • Is it a good idea to buy a car from a girl that you have crush on? Its a used 95 honda she paid 2,000$ for it. I told her i will give her 1,000 for it. She said she can't do that so i then offered her 3,000 for it then she just looked confused i'm not sure if that is good or bad. So i finally offered her 4,000 for it and she just said that she will think about it.
