I just got finished with my motorcycle courses approved by the DMV but what do I do now?

So I'm 17 years old and just finished the classes so the next step is taking teh DMV written test for motorcycles right? After that do i have to wait 6 months in order to drive on the freeway? Or can I drive on the freeway once I get the license because the bike shops are in other cities? I live in California and have already had by drivers license for a car for 5 months.

Added (1). If you could recommend a bike that would be awesome I practiced on the 250cc honda rebels in the classes and were relatively easy to control and light for me. I was checking out some 500 cc bikes and 300cc bikes which one should I be looking at?

You go to the DMV, pass the written test, get a paper that says you have a motorcycle *permit*. Restrictions: solo, daytime, no freeways -- for six months or your 18th birthday, whichever comes first. Then back to the DMV and swap it for your license, no restrictions.

Bike? What do you want -- fun or transportation? I ride strictly for transportation, now have a 65mph Vespa 150, about 80% city, 20% freeway around Los Angeles, take trips on the Interstates to the Mojave and to the Sierras. 250cc is capable of any road, anything bigger is for more fun and/or more comfort.

If you want cruiser, like the Rebel, Honda Yamaha and Suzuki have/had 250cc cruisers -- all 330 pounds, all good of 75+ mph. If you want a bike more, Suzuki's 652cc Big Single, S40, is just 50 pounds heavier and can do 85+ mph. All four Jap manufacturers had 250-300cc sporty bikes, all 85+ mph. Likewise have 200-250cc dual-sports that can do 75+ mph. If you are tall enough to be comfortable on a dual-sport, they are killer city bikes -- don't care if they drop, don't care about bad pavement, quick, agile.
