Is a honda cbr500r a good first motorcycle?

Even though it is generally accepted in the motorcycle community that you should start with a 250 to 300cc ( or so) bike, a number of people and motorcycle reviewers( including motorcycles.com) recommended a Honda cbr500r as a viable option as a first bike. I'm planning on taking classes before I get my license or buy anything. I'm a pretty safe driver. I don't have any speeding tickets, and I have never been pulled over by the police. The low end and midrange power of the cbr500r are two things that interest me over a ninja 300( or simular bike).

It certainly can be a good first motorcycle. Don't discount the little Ninjas though, they are great bikes too.

You have no experience and yet you discount the 300 or 250 because of low end and mid range power deficiencies.

Why not take the training courses and then decide, at least you will have slightly more experience than opinions gleaned from the internet.

It's not a good choice. You will be making mistakes. Opening up too fast on bends etc. You may come off on a 500 where a 250 would be forgiving. Your choice.

  • What's a good first motorcycle? I'm looking for my first cheap, reliable motorcycle to get me into the city each day and back. I don't know much about them but I don't want anything too powerful so a 250 of some sort and preferably a japanese made bike such as yamaha and honda etc. I really like the retro/classic style bikes but I don't want it too old. Please help me out as I don't know where to even begin looking really.
  • Ninja 300 or Honda CBR500r for beginner? I'm looking at getting a bike and the two that interest me are the Ninja 300 and the Honda CBR500r. Just want to know what you guys would pick and why? I'm leaning towards the Ninja 300. Like the looks of it better but i'm also 6'4'' and about 175 Lbs so that may be a little small in size, motor has plenty of powerful might be a little cramped though. But anyway, what are your thoughts?
  • Honda cbr500r on a 1000+ mile tour? I'm thinking about taking my cbr500r to Vancouver and back. Would it make the trip? I'm planning on buying a new chain, bringing a extra chain with me, some chain lube, and oil along with my toolkit and clothes. Will it make it or should I rent a dedicated touring bike.
  • Good first street motorcycle? I have a lot of riding experience on a Honda crf150 after completing the motorcycle saftey course and getting my endorsement I'm looking for a first bike. Is a kawasaki Vulcan 500 a good choice? A Yamaha r6 is a dream bike but I'm assuming its way to much power. I'm 5'8 155 pounds btw. What's the best intermediate/beginner bike that is not to underpowered for ocational highway use?
