2001 Honda Accord engine will not turn - 1

Added (1). 2001 Honda Accord engine will not turn. It has been cold the previous few days/nights. The batteries good, lights come on strong, starter engages but engine will not turn.

Sounds like the starter is not connecting with the engine - give it a bash

If you can get on the crank bolt with a big socket try to spin the engine by hand. If it spins get a new starter.

The starter requires a lot more juice compared to the lights. Try turning on the headlamps and then cranking over the engine. If the lights dim down significantly, the battery is not as strong as you think it is.

It may need more juice. Try a jump start.

It can also be helpful to spray starter fluid into the air intake before starting it or while starting it.

A battery is good for about 5 years - more or less. It depends on the quality of the battery. At some point, the battery can no longer hold a charge and is junk. The only thing to do is replace it. So figure out how old your battery is. If it is over 5 years old, then it is time to replace it anyways.

Starters require more amps to turn them as they get older. At some point a battery can no longer supply enough power to turn it over. So your starter could need a lot of amps to turn over and is on the way to being no good anymore. I had to hit my starter with a rubber mallet to get it to work before I replaced it a week later. That happened once or twice.

The last place I bought a battery from was Menards. They have a good deal of Exide batteries - if you live in the Midwest/ their area of the country. If you are a Costco member, they sell Interstate batteries at a good price; but it costs more. Interstate has the best reputation of battery makers. Costco makes it worth buying one. Otherwise, any auto parts store or Walmart will work just fine.

Starter bendix is broken. Replace the starter.

Listen to Jay P! Batteries last about 5 or 6 years typically. Based on the age of yours it is time for a new one.

Buy a new battery.

I'm not clear on what happens when you turn the key to "start." Does the starter whir or just click? If it whirs the starter is bad (the grease is hardened from water getting into it - regreasing is a medium DIY job).
