2001 Honda accord shifting problem?

I have a 2001 honda accord and for some reason second gear doesn't work at all I have to drive fast up until past 20 mph so that 3rd gear catches. When I put the car on 2 it doesn't move at all… Is there a sensor I could change… I already checked the shifting solenoid and solenoids A and B they're fine. It's just second gear. Does the 2nd gear pressure switch have anything to do with this?

Go have the transmission codes and tranny data read before you waste money guessing.

Resistance checks on solenoids are not reliable. Replace the solenoids and pray. No joy, it is time to see a transmission shop or a mechanic with a scanner with directional control capability. Accords of this vintage had transmission issues. Do not be surprised if the garage tells you need a new transmission.

How's the fluid. If it smells stop wasting money. Transmission is toast. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help. Solenoids and pressure switch won't stop the car from moving especially it it won't move in the second gear range

Hi so what you expect from a now 17 years old car has a lot to do with it. Designed to last 7 years.

This generation Accord (1998-2003) had issues with the transmissions even when they were new. This car is 17 years old, so it would come as no surprise on any car at that age. Sounds like this one is going out. Have it checked out by a competent mechanic.

As so many others point out, the 2001 Accord was a poster child for the Great Honda Automatic Transmission Debacle of 1998-2004 (some say longer). I was active in a Honda forum in the early 2000s and there was more than one owner there who had two transmissions replaced under warranty and had to pay for the third themselves. The first source as the best explanation of all this that I have found.

You can call the service department of your local Honda dealer to find out if Honda did the oil jet modification to that car, but even if that comes back positive this is a very good time to take stock of your situation. You can end up spending far more than the car is worth if you are not careful. Carcomplaints.com rates the 2001 Accord "Avoid like the plague" because of the horrible transmission problems.

  • Resistance when shifting from park to reverse? Automatic trans honda? It's hard basically to shift from park to reverse you have to fight it
  • Does shifting in an automatic damage the car? My car (Honda pilot 2011) has a 1/2/3 setting on the car and if I use that while driving will I damage anything? I typically use it when I'm driving for fun and shift it at red line and then shift it back into drive at the end of 3rd gear. My old car was a stick and I miss it but will it hurt the car besides the normal wear and tear?
  • What am I doing wrong while shifting? When riding my motorcycle (Honda CBR 1000 RR) while shifting from 3rd to 4th I hear some grinding sound, and if I keep the throttle held down after the grinding stops the bike lurches forward and then rides like usual. Am I shifting up to early, too late, or what? This only happens sometimes.
  • Ideas for a cheap manual shifting car? I'm want to get a car with a manual transmission that is more fuel efficient than my truck. Nothing new something from the 90s or 2000s. I like the look of the honda prelude but i want some other options too. 2 doors would be nice, 4 cylinder engine, must have a manual transmission. So who has any ideas about what i'm looking for?
