95 honda accord EX. Everything is original under the hood. What to do?
I had a mechanic act rather surprised that virtually every major component *under the hood* of my 95 accord sedan EX automatic is factory original. This includes the timing belt, alternator, and virtually everything else. It has 190,000 miles on it.
The only complaint I have about my car is that it feels like I have to press too hard on the brake at slow speeds, and the steering feels a bit "goosey" or "loose" at highway speeds. Although, neither of these problems are severe, maybe I'm noticing things too much since I'm used to driving a new Camry?
I would like to be able to drive my car another 100k miles if possible. What is a list of everything that should be replaced and done to my car?
Added (1). I'd also like to be able to take this car on some long road trips without worrying about it breaking down. What all should be replaced or updated?
Just do proper preventive maintenance and it will last long. Consider having the timing belt replaced, along with the water pump and serpentine belts.
The loose steering may be caused of worn out rubber on ball joints and/or tie rods.
The brakes could be low on fluid, may have air on the brake line, or bad master cylinder. Have it checked by professional.
Explain in more detail please.
An interference engine, which you have on your Accord, with 190,000 miles on the odometer where the timing belt has not been replaced is a ticking time bomb. If that belt breaks you will have serious internal engine damage. Replace the cam belt and water pump today. From what you describe about the steering you need to have all steering components inspected. I suspect you have some parts that are worn and need replacing. These are not minor issues they are safety issues. Also replace the serpentine belt. Drain and flush the cooling system and install fresh coolant and a new thermostat. Have the transmission fluid changed and make sure they use only genuine Honda ATF-Z1 or ATF DW1 and no other fluid. Also have the brake fluid changed at this time. Replace the spark plugs and spark plug wires and you should be good for many more miles.
Do the timing and balance belts.
A 10 piece front end kit runs about 90 bucks off ebay.
If you only have 190k miles on it, you could definitely use it another 100k miles if not 150k or more. I love hondas, and I love my honda accord '05. The brakes I would definitely get checked by another mechanic other then the one who will just be so surprised the whole time that he doesn't notice the problem, and as for the steering, if it is working fine for now and not severe, I would put it off until you save up some money because that is probably going to be somewhat expensive to fix, Good luck with fixing your car troubles.

- Is it a bad idea for me to refinance my original Honda auto loan? My credit has improved over the last 6 months and I would like to refinance in another 6 months or so once I feel more comfortable with my score. BUT is this a bad idea? Will Honda scold me for this when I go to the Service dept for maintenance? Or will other future lenders see me as some sort of unreliable consumer moving forward? I worry about this. Any advice would be great and much appreciated!
